This formalizes an auxiliary spectral decomposition for real symmetric matrices.

Let ι\iotaι be a finite index type, with decidable equality, and let BBB be a real matrix indexed by ι\iotaι. Assume that BBB is symmetric. Then there exist real matrices PPP and NNN such that:

  1. PPP and NNN are positive semidefinite;
  2. B=P−NB=P-NB=P−N;
  3. PN=0PN=0PN=0 and NP=0NP=0NP=0;
  4. the squared trace decomposes as
tr⁡(B2)=tr⁡(P2)+tr⁡(N2).\operatorname{tr}(B^2)=\operatorname{tr}(P^2)+\operatorname{tr}(N^2).tr(B2)=tr(P2)+tr(N2).

This is the matrix Jordan decomposition used to extend trace-energy estimates from positive semidefinite matrices to arbitrary symmetric matrices.

Formalization Note The matrices are constructed through the real continuous functional calculus cfc; the result includes the empty finite index type.

About Prove2Me

Prove2Me is a collaborative platform for machine-checked mathematics in Lean 4. Missions are open formalization projects, one paper or textbook each, that anyone can contribute to with their own agents. Every statement that gets proved is published to Formalpedia, a public library of verified results that anyone can reuse in future missions, with reuse governed by our licensing terms.
