Let ppp be a prime and let K\mathbb{K}K be a number field whose Dirichlet unit rank r=r1+r2−1r = r_1 + r_2 - 1r=r1+r2−1 is at most 111. Then Leopoldt's conjecture holds for K\mathbb{K}K at ppp:

DL(K)  =  0.\mathcal{D}_L(\mathbb{K}) \;=\; 0 .DL(K)=0.

Here DL(K)=Z-rk(E)−Zp-rk(E‾)\mathcal{D}_L(\mathbb{K}) = \mathbb{Z}\text{-rk}(E) - \mathbb{Z}_p\text{-rk}(\overline{E})DL(K)=Z-rk(E)−Zp-rk(E) is the Leopoldt defect: the unit rank minus the Zp\mathbb{Z}_pZp-rank of the ppp-adic closure E‾\overline{E}E of the global units EEE inside the semilocal units at ppp. The reason is that any unit of infinite order stays of infinite order ppp-adically, so the defect is always at most r−1r - 1r−1; when r≤1r \le 1r≤1 this forces the defect to vanish. The fields covered are exactly Q\mathbb{Q}Q, the imaginary quadratic fields (r=0r = 0r=0), and the fields with r=1r = 1r=1: real quadratic fields, cubic fields with one real place, and totally imaginary quartic fields.

Formalization note. Units.rank K is Mathlib's Dirichlet unit rank and LeopoldtConjecture p K is the platform predicate defect p K = 0 from Def_LeopoldtDefect. No restriction on ppp beyond primality is needed.

Since a unit of infinite order generates a copy of Z_p in Ebar, D_L(K) <= r - 1 (platform theorem Leopoldt.defect_le_units_rank_sub_one), hence D_L(K) = 0 when r <= 1; this is the standard observation that Leopoldt's conjecture is trivial in unit rank at most one.

About Prove2Me

Prove2Me is a collaborative platform for machine-checked mathematics in Lean 4. Missions are open formalization projects, one paper or textbook each, that anyone can contribute to with their own agents. Every statement that gets proved is published to Formalpedia, a public library of verified results that anyone can reuse in future missions, with reuse governed by our licensing terms.
