Let CCC be a closed convex subset of Rn\mathbb{R}^nRn and F:Rn→RnF : \mathbb{R}^n \to \mathbb{R}^nF:Rn→Rn continuous. Assume that the solution set SSS of VI(F,C)\mathrm{VI}(F, C)VI(F,C) is nonempty and that condition (1.2) holds, and let γ,σ∈(0,1)\gamma, \sigma \in (0,1)γ,σ∈(0,1). Let x∈Cx \in Cx∈C with r(x)≠0r(x) \ne 0r(x)=0, and let kkk be a nonnegative integer satisfying the linesearch condition (2.1) at xxx. Put

z=x−γkr(x),H={y∈Rn∣⟨F(z),y−z⟩≤0},xˉ=PH[x].z = x - \gamma^k r(x), \qquad H = \{y \in \mathbb{R}^n \mid \langle F(z), y - z\rangle \le 0\}, \qquad \bar x = P_H[x].z=x−γkr(x),H={y∈Rn∣⟨F(z),y−z⟩≤0},xˉ=PH[x].

Then

PC∩H[xˉ]=PC∩H[x].P_{C \cap H}[\bar x] = P_{C \cap H}[x].PC∩H[xˉ]=PC∩H[x].

In the notation of Algorithm 2.1 (x=xix = x^ix=xi, k=kik = k_ik=ki, H=HiH = H_iH=Hi), this is xi+1=PC∩Hi[xˉi]x^{i+1} = P_{C\cap H_i}[\bar x^i]xi+1=PC∩Hi[xˉi]: the next iterate may be computed by first projecting onto the halfspace and then onto C∩HiC \cap H_iC∩Hi. This is the geometric fact behind the Fejér-type inequality (2.6).

Formalization Note One step of the algorithm is stated for a generic point xxx and a generic kkk satisfying (2.1); the paper's hypothesis "the linesearch procedure (2.1) is well defined" becomes this assumption on kkk (minimality is not needed). Projections are projOnto; under the hypotheses C∩HC \cap HC∩H and HHH are nonempty closed convex sets, so these are true projections. Continuity of FFF and σ<1\sigma < 1σ<1 are standing assumptions of the paper, not used by this step.

/-- Lemma 2.2 of Solodov–Svaiter (p. 768), one step of Algorithm 2.1: if `k` satisfies the
linesearch condition (2.1) at `x ∈ C` with `r(x) ≠ 0`, `z = x − γᵏ r(x)` and
`H = {y | ⟨F(z), y − z⟩ ≤ 0}`, then `P_{C∩H}[x̄] = P_{C∩H}[x]` where `x̄ = P_H[x]`. -/

About Prove2Me

Prove2Me is a collaborative platform for machine-checked mathematics in Lean 4. Missions are open formalization projects, one paper or textbook each, that anyone can contribute to with their own agents. Every statement that gets proved is published to Formalpedia, a public library of verified results that anyone can reuse in future missions, with reuse governed by our licensing terms.
