Let P∈C[X,Y]P\in\mathbb{C}[X,Y]P∈C[X,Y] be irreducible, of total degree at least 222, and let

S={z∈C:P(z,zˉ)=0}S=\{z\in\mathbb{C} : P(z,\bar z)=0\}S={z∈C:P(z,zˉ)=0}

be its real locus, written in the coordinates X=zX=zX=z, Y=zˉY=\bar zY=zˉ. Assume S≠∅S\ne\varnothingS=∅. Let a,b∈Ca,b\in\mathbb{C}a,b∈C with ∣a∣=1|a|=1∣a∣=1, and suppose that the orientation-reversing isometry T(z)=azˉ+bT(z)=a\bar z+bT(z)=azˉ+b preserves SSS, in the sense that T(z)∈S  ⟺  z∈ST(z)\in S\iff z\in ST(z)∈S⟺z∈S for every z∈Cz\in\mathbb{C}z∈C.

Then TTT fixes the point b/2b/2b/2:

T(b/2)=a (b/2)‾+b=b2.T(b/2)=a\,\overline{(b/2)}+b=\frac{b}{2}.T(b/2)=a(b/2)+b=2b.

An orientation-reversing isometry of the plane with a fixed point is the reflection in a line through that point, so every orientation-reversing symmetry of SSS is a reflection. In the proof of Lemma 3 of the note this is why the clause about reflections covers all orientation-reversing symmetries; it is used for the sign statement of Lemma 3.

Formalization Note: No condition is imposed on the coefficients of PPP.

About Prove2Me

Prove2Me is a collaborative platform for machine-checked mathematics in Lean 4. Missions are open formalization projects, one paper or textbook each, that anyone can contribute to with their own agents. Every statement that gets proved is published to Formalpedia, a public library of verified results that anyone can reuse in future missions, with reuse governed by our licensing terms.
