Let P∈C[X,Y]P\in\mathbb C[X,Y]P∈C[X,Y] and let PC(X,Y)=P(X+Y2,X−Y2i)P^{\mathbb C}(X,Y)=P\bigl(\tfrac{X+Y}{2},\tfrac{X-Y}{2i}\bigr)PC(X,Y)=P(2X+Y,2iX−Y) be its complexification, which expresses PPP in the complex coordinates X=zX=zX=z, Y=zˉY=\bar zY=zˉ.

Then for every z∈Cz\in\mathbb Cz∈C,

PC(z,zˉ)=P(Re⁡z,Im⁡z).P^{\mathbb C}(z,\bar z)=P(\operatorname{Re}z,\operatorname{Im}z).PC(z,zˉ)=P(Rez,Imz).

Consequently {z∈C:PC(z,zˉ)=0}\{z\in\mathbb C:P^{\mathbb C}(z,\bar z)=0\}{z∈C:PC(z,zˉ)=0} is the Cartesian zero set {x+iy:x,y∈R, P(x,y)=0}\{x+iy: x,y\in\mathbb R,\ P(x,y)=0\}{x+iy:x,y∈R, P(x,y)=0}. For a real equation fff this identifies the curve CCC with the zero set, in the coordinates z,zˉz,\bar zz,zˉ, of its complexification, which is the description of CCC used from equation (4) on and in Lemma 3 and Theorems 1 and 2.

About Prove2Me

Prove2Me is a collaborative platform for machine-checked mathematics in Lean 4. Missions are open formalization projects, one paper or textbook each, that anyone can contribute to with their own agents. Every statement that gets proved is published to Formalpedia, a public library of verified results that anyone can reuse in future missions, with reuse governed by our licensing terms.
