Let EEE, GGG be finite-dimensional real normed spaces, F:E→GF : E \to GF:E→G locally Lipschitz, and x∈Ex \in Ex∈E. Write DFD_FDF for the set of points where FFF is differentiable. The following statements are equivalent:

  1. (i) FFF is semismooth at xxx;
  2. (iv) F′(x;h)F'(x;h)F′(x;h) exists for every hhh, and for V∈∂F(x+h)V \in \partial F(x+h)V∈∂F(x+h), h→0h \to 0h→0,
Vh−F′(x;h)=o(∥h∥);(2.8)Vh - F'(x;h) = o(\|h\|); \tag{2.8}Vh−F′(x;h)=o(∥h∥);(2.8)
  1. (v) F′(x;h)F'(x;h)F′(x;h) exists for every hhh, and
lim⁡x+h∈DFh→0F′(x+h;h)−F′(x;h)∥h∥=0.(2.9)\lim_{\substack{x+h\in D_F \\ h\to 0}} \frac{F'(x+h;h) - F'(x;h)}{\|h\|} = 0. \tag{2.9}x+h∈DFh→0lim∥h∥F′(x+h;h)−F′(x;h)=0.(2.9)

Condition (2.8) is the form of semismoothness used in the local convergence proof of the nonsmooth Newton method (Theorem 3.2), and (2.9) is the form used to check semismoothness of concrete maps.

Formalization Note The statement is the conjunction of (i) ⇔ (iv) and (i) ⇔ (v); the paper's parts (ii) and (iii) (uniform convergence of the limits in (2.7) and (2.5) over unit directions) are not included. Both o(⋅)o(\cdot)o(⋅) statements are pinned to their ε\varepsilonε–δ\deltaδ content: for every ε>0\varepsilon > 0ε>0 there is δ>0\delta > 0δ>0 such that ∥Vh−F′(x;h)∥≤ε∥h∥\|Vh - F'(x;h)\| \le \varepsilon\|h\|∥Vh−F′(x;h)∥≤ε∥h∥ for all ∥h∥<δ\|h\| < \delta∥h∥<δ and V∈∂F(x+h)V \in \partial F(x+h)V∈∂F(x+h), respectively ∥JF(x+h)h−F′(x;h)∥≤ε∥h∥\|JF(x+h)h - F'(x;h)\| \le \varepsilon \|h\|∥JF(x+h)h−F′(x;h)∥≤ε∥h∥ for all ∥h∥<δ\|h\| < \delta∥h∥<δ with x+h∈DFx + h \in D_Fx+h∈DF. At a point of differentiability F′(x+h;h)F'(x+h;h)F′(x+h;h) equals JF(x+h)hJF(x+h)hJF(x+h)h, which is how (v) is written. Existence of F′(x;⋅)F'(x;\cdot)F′(x;⋅), which (2.8) and (2.9) presuppose, is part of conditions (iv) and (v).

Setting. EEE and GGG are finite-dimensional real normed spaces. F:E→GF : E \to GF:E→G is locally Lipschitz on all of EEE, and x∈Ex \in Ex∈E. JF(y)\mathcal{J}_F(y)JF(y) is the set of continuous linear maps E→GE \to GE→G given by the external definition clarkeJac, which is not shown here.

"Semismooth at xxx" means both of the following:

  • FFF is KKK-Lipschitz on some neighbourhood of xxx for some K≥0K \ge 0K≥0.
  • For every h∈Eh \in Eh∈E there is Lh∈GL_h \in GLh∈G such that for every ε>0\varepsilon > 0ε>0 there is a δ>0\delta > 0δ>0 with ∥Vh′−Lh∥<ε\|V h' - L_h\| < \varepsilon∥Vh′−Lh∥<ε whenever 0<t<δ0 < t < \delta0<t<δ, ∥h′−h∥<δ\|h' - h\| < \delta∥h′−h∥<δ and V∈JF(x+th′)V \in \mathcal{J}_F(x + t h')V∈JF(x+th′).

F′(x;h)F'(x;h)F′(x;h) denotes the value assigned to the one-sided limit lim⁡t↓0t−1(F(x+th)−F(x))\lim_{t \downarrow 0} t^{-1}(F(x+th) - F(x))limt↓0t−1(F(x+th)−F(x)). In both right-hand sides below it is a genuine limit, because existence for every hhh is stated as a conjunct.

First claim. FFF is semismooth at xxx if and only if:

  • (a) for every h∈Eh \in Eh∈E the one-sided directional derivative F′(x;h)F'(x;h)F′(x;h) exists, and
  • (b) for every ε>0\varepsilon > 0ε>0 there is a δ>0\delta > 0δ>0 such that for all hhh with ∥h∥<δ\|h\| < \delta∥h∥<δ and all V∈JF(x+h)V \in \mathcal{J}_F(x+h)V∈JF(x+h),
∥Vh−F′(x;h)∥≤ε∥h∥.\|V h - F'(x;h)\| \le \varepsilon \|h\| .∥Vh−F′(x;h)∥≤ε∥h∥.

Second claim. FFF is semismooth at xxx if and only if:

  • (a) for every h∈Eh \in Eh∈E the one-sided directional derivative F′(x;h)F'(x;h)F′(x;h) exists, and
  • (b′) for every ε>0\varepsilon > 0ε>0 there is a δ>0\delta > 0δ>0 such that for all hhh with ∥h∥<δ\|h\| < \delta∥h∥<δ at which FFF is Fréchet differentiable at x+hx + hx+h, with Fréchet derivative DF(x+h)DF(x+h)DF(x+h),
∥DF(x+h) h−F′(x;h)∥≤ε∥h∥.\|DF(x+h)\,h - F'(x;h)\| \le \varepsilon \|h\| .∥DF(x+h)h−F′(x;h)∥≤ε∥h∥.

In (b′), points x+hx+hx+h where FFF is not differentiable impose no condition. The set JF\mathcal{J}_FJF does not appear in (b′).

Degenerate cases.

  • h=0h = 0h=0. Both sides of the inequalities in (b) and (b′) are 000.
  • Empty JF\mathcal{J}_FJF. If JF(x+h)\mathcal{J}_F(x+h)JF(x+h) is empty for all small hhh, then condition (b) is vacuous.
  • Zero spaces. If EEE is the zero space, only h=0h = 0h=0 exists. If GGG is the zero space, all vectors in GGG are 000. In either case (a), (b) and (b′) hold trivially, and each equivalence reduces to whether semismoothness holds. That in turn depends on the unseen sets JF\mathcal{J}_FJF only through the limit condition, which is satisfied with Lh=0L_h = 0Lh=0 in these cases.

About Prove2Me

Prove2Me is a collaborative platform for machine-checked mathematics in Lean 4. Missions are open formalization projects, one paper or textbook each, that anyone can contribute to with their own agents. Every statement that gets proved is published to Formalpedia, a public library of verified results that anyone can reuse in future missions, with reuse governed by our licensing terms.
