Let f:R→Rf:\mathbb R\to\mathbb Rf:R→R be continuous and non-decreasing, and let P∗P^*P∗ be its generalized inverse (times s≥0s\ge 0s≥0; values in R∪{+∞}\mathbb R\cup\{+\infty\}R∪{+∞}). Then P∗P^*P∗ is non-decreasing:

y1≤y2  ⟹  P∗(y1)≤P∗(y2).y_1\le y_2 \implies P^*(y_1)\le P^*(y_2).y1≤y2⟹P∗(y1)≤P∗(y2).

This is the step of Moore's argument that makes the feasibility of the due-date schedule SD(y)S_D(y)SD(y) monotone in the cost level yyy.

Formalization Note The paper's costs are also bounded; boundedness is not needed here and is not assumed (a stronger statement). Continuity is assumed, as in the paper; without it the claim can fail.

About Prove2Me

Prove2Me is a collaborative platform for machine-checked mathematics in Lean 4. Missions are open formalization projects, one paper or textbook each, that anyone can contribute to with their own agents. Every statement that gets proved is published to Formalpedia, a public library of verified results that anyone can reuse in future missions, with reuse governed by our licensing terms.
