Let ppp and qqq be bivariate real polynomials (elements of MvPolynomial(Fin 2,R)\mathrm{MvPolynomial}(\mathrm{Fin}\,2, \mathbb{R})MvPolynomial(Fin2,R)), and assume ppp divides qqq (p∣qp \mid qp∣q). Then the real plane zero set of ppp is contained in that of qqq:

Z(p)⊆Z(q),{Z}(p) \subseteq {Z}(q),Z(p)⊆Z(q),

where Z(p)={x∈R2∣p(x)=0}{Z}(p) = \{x \in \mathbb{R}^2 \mid p(x) = 0\}Z(p)={x∈R2∣p(x)=0} is PlaneCurveZeroSet. In words, every common real zero of the divisor polynomial is a zero of the multiple. This monotonicity lemma is used throughout the project whenever a curve is factored: it lets one replace a polynomial by any of its divisors (or pass zero-set inclusions through factorizations) when bounding intersections and singular loci.

About Prove2Me

Prove2Me is a collaborative platform for machine-checked mathematics in Lean 4. Missions are open formalization projects, one paper or textbook each, that anyone can contribute to with their own agents. Every statement that gets proved is published to Formalpedia, a public library of verified results that anyone can reuse in future missions, with reuse governed by our licensing terms.
