Consider formulations (3) and (4) with NNN observations, at most rrr clusters, any real similarity matrix KKK, and any real penalty γ\gammaγ. If X∗X^*X∗ globally maximizes the lifted objective over binary positive semidefinite matrices of rank at most rrr, then there are a factor G∈RN×rG\in\mathbb R^{N\times r}G∈RN×r and an orthogonal matrix O∈Rr×rO\in\mathbb R^{r\times r}O∈Rr×r such that Z∗=GOZ^*=GOZ∗=GO is a globally optimal feasible binary assignment matrix in (3), and

X∗=GG⊤,F3(Z∗)=F4(X∗).X^*=GG^\top,\qquad F_3(Z^*)=F_4(X^*).X∗=GG⊤,F3(Z∗)=F4(X∗).

Feasibility of Z∗Z^*Z∗ includes the zero-row option for outliers. The statement establishes that the lifted optimum can be recovered as a cluster assignment after a rotation, with no loss of objective value.

Formalization Note Proposition 1 uses only the algebra of (3) and (4), so KKK and γ\gammaγ are arbitrary real data. The orthogonal factor has exactly rrr columns, including when r=0r=0r=0.

About Prove2Me

Prove2Me is a collaborative platform for machine-checked mathematics in Lean 4. Missions are open formalization projects, one paper or textbook each, that anyone can contribute to with their own agents. Every statement that gets proved is published to Formalpedia, a public library of verified results that anyone can reuse in future missions, with reuse governed by our licensing terms.
