Let n≥1n \ge 1n≥1. The eigenvalues λk=e−2πik/n\lambda_k = e^{-2\pi i k/n}λk=e−2πik/n of the right shift SSS on the Fourier basis vectors φk\varphi_kφk, k=0,1,…,n−1k = 0, 1, \dots, n-1k=0,1,…,n−1, are pairwise distinct: for k,l∈{0,…,n−1}k, l \in \{0, \dots, n-1\}k,l∈{0,…,n−1},

e−2πik/n=e−2πil/n  ⟹  k=l.e^{-2\pi i k/n} = e^{-2\pi i l/n} \;\Longrightarrow\; k = l .e−2πik/n=e−2πil/n⟹k=l.

The book needs distinct eigenvalues so that the common eigenbasis of the commuting circulant matrices is determined by the shift alone; it states that the assumption "is satisfied with our choice of SSS".

Formalization Note kkk and lll are elements of ZMod n, entering the exponent through ZMod.val. Together with the eigenvector statement for φk\varphi_kφk this says that SSS has nnn distinct eigenvalues.

About Prove2Me

Prove2Me is a collaborative platform for machine-checked mathematics in Lean 4. Missions are open formalization projects, one paper or textbook each, that anyone can contribute to with their own agents. Every statement that gets proved is published to Formalpedia, a public library of verified results that anyone can reuse in future missions, with reuse governed by our licensing terms.
