Let (x,p)(x,p)(x,p) be a truthful direct mechanism for task scheduling, ttt a positive type vector, iii an agent and X=xi(t)X = x^i(t)X=xi(t). For disjoint task sets A,BA,BA,B let Δi(A,B)=pi(A∪B,t−i)−pi(A,t−i)\Delta^i(A,B) = p^i(A\cup B,t^{-i}) - p^i(A,t^{-i})Δi(A,B)=pi(A∪B,t−i)−pi(A,t−i) and ti(A)=∑j∈Atjit^i(A) = \sum_{j\in A} t^i_jti(A)=∑j∈Atji. For every set D≠XD \ne XD=X that is attainable for iii against t−it^{-i}t−i:

  1. if D⊂XD \subset XD⊂X then Δi(D,X−D)≥ti(X−D)\Delta^i(D, X-D) \ge t^i(X-D)Δi(D,X−D)≥ti(X−D);
  2. if D⊃XD \supset XD⊃X then Δi(X,D−X)≤ti(D−X)\Delta^i(X, D-X) \le t^i(D-X)Δi(X,D−X)≤ti(D−X);
  3. otherwise, with L=D∩XL = D\cap XL=D∩X,
Δi(L,X−L)−ti(X−L) ≥ Δi(L,D−L)−ti(D−L).\Delta^i(L, X-L) - t^i(X-L) \ \ge\ \Delta^i(L, D-L) - t^i(D-L).Δi(L,X−L)−ti(X−L) ≥ Δi(L,D−L)−ti(D−L).

Moreover, if an attainable set YYY satisfies these inequalities strictly (with YYY in place of XXX) for every attainable D≠YD \neq YD=Y, then Y=X=xi(t)Y = X = x^i(t)Y=X=xi(t).

The lemma is used to show that a perturbation of agent 1's type which makes its current bundle strictly better leaves the allocation unchanged (Claim 4.8).

Formalization Note As for Proposition 4.5, DDD ranges over sets attainable for iii against t−it^{-i}t−i (Definition 12 gives unattainable sets price 000, and the printed "for each set DDD" fails for them). The "Moreover" part also requires YYY attainable, as in its only use (Y=x1(t)Y = x^1(t)Y=x1(t)). Since D≠XD \ne XD=X, the paper's ⊂\subset⊂, ⊃\supset⊃ are proper inclusions; "otherwise" means neither D⊆XD \subseteq XD⊆X nor X⊆DX \subseteq DX⊆D. The set XXX is a binder with the hypothesis X=xi(t)X = x^i(t)X=xi(t).

/-- Lemma 4.7, over attainable sets: let `X = xⁱ(t)`. For every attainable `D ≠ X`,
(1) if `D ⊂ X` then `Δⁱ(D, X - D) ≥ tⁱ(X - D)`; (2) if `D ⊃ X` then `Δⁱ(X, D - X) ≤ tⁱ(D - X)`;
(3) otherwise, with `L = D ∩ X`, `Δⁱ(L, X - L) - tⁱ(X - L) ≥ Δⁱ(L, D - L) - tⁱ(D - L)`.
Moreover, an attainable `Y` satisfying these inequalities strictly for every attainable `D ≠ Y`
equals `X`. -/
