Let m≥1m\ge1m≥1 be an integer and let α∈C\alpha\in\mathbb Cα∈C with α≠αˉ\alpha\ne\bar\alphaα=αˉ, that is α∉R\alpha\notin\mathbb Rα∈/R (no condition on ∣α∣|\alpha|∣α∣). On P1×P1\mathbb P^1\times\mathbb P^1P1×P1, with homogeneous coordinates ([x0:x1],[y0:y1])([x_0:x_1],[y_0:y_1])([x0:x1],[y0:y1]), let

Vα={([x0:x1],[y0:y1]) : αx0mx1y1m+1+x0m+1y0y1m+αˉx1m+1y0my1+x0x1my0m+1=0},V_\alpha=\bigl\{([x_0:x_1],[y_0:y_1])\ :\ \alpha x_0^mx_1y_1^{m+1}+x_0^{m+1}y_0y_1^m+\bar\alpha x_1^{m+1}y_0^my_1+x_0x_1^my_0^{m+1}=0\bigr\},Vα={([x0:x1],[y0:y1]) : αx0mx1y1m+1+x0m+1y0y1m+αˉx1m+1y0my1+x0x1my0m+1=0},

the zero locus of the bihomogenization of bidegree (m+1,m+1)(m+1,m+1)(m+1,m+1) of the polynomial Pα(X,Y)=Xm(α+XY)+Ym(αˉ+XY)P_\alpha(X,Y)=X^m(\alpha+XY)+Y^m(\bar\alpha+XY)Pα(X,Y)=Xm(α+XY)+Ym(αˉ+XY) of equation (6). Give P1×P1\mathbb P^1\times\mathbb P^1P1×P1 the atlas topology: for the four standard charts ϕ0(X,Y)=([X:1],[Y:1])\phi_0(X,Y)=([X:1],[Y:1])ϕ0(X,Y)=([X:1],[Y:1]), ϕ1(u,Y)=([1:u],[Y:1])\phi_1(u,Y)=([1:u],[Y:1])ϕ1(u,Y)=([1:u],[Y:1]), ϕ2(v,X)=([X:1],[1:v])\phi_2(v,X)=([X:1],[1:v])ϕ2(v,X)=([X:1],[1:v]) and ϕ3(u,v)=([1:u],[1:v])\phi_3(u,v)=([1:u],[1:v])ϕ3(u,v)=([1:u],[1:v]) from C2\mathbb C^2C2, a set UUU is open if and only if every ϕi−1(U)\phi_i^{-1}(U)ϕi−1(U) is open in the Zariski topology of C2\mathbb C^2C2.

Then VαV_\alphaVα is irreducible: it is nonempty, and whenever Vα⊆A∪BV_\alpha\subseteq A\cup BVα⊆A∪B with A,BA,BA,B closed, Vα⊆AV_\alpha\subseteq AVα⊆A or Vα⊆BV_\alpha\subseteq BVα⊆B.

This concerns VαV_\alphaVα, the compactification of the curve (6) in P1×P1\mathbb P^1\times\mathbb P^1P1×P1 that the note introduces before Lemma 4: the whole compactified curve, boundary points included, is irreducible in the topology for which the four standard charts, with the Zariski topology on C2\mathbb C^2C2, are open embeddings.

Formalization Note: VαV_\alphaVα is defined by evaluating the bihomogeneous polynomial at chosen representatives of the two points, which does not depend on the choice. The atlas topology and the Zariski topology on C2\mathbb C^2C2 (induced from the prime spectrum through evaluation ideals) are local instances.

About Prove2Me

Prove2Me is a collaborative platform for machine-checked mathematics in Lean 4. Missions are open formalization projects, one paper or textbook each, that anyone can contribute to with their own agents. Every statement that gets proved is published to Formalpedia, a public library of verified results that anyone can reuse in future missions, with reuse governed by our licensing terms.
