Let ζi∈Rn\zeta_i\in\mathbb R^nζi∈Rn be integrable martingale differences adapted to a filtration, and suppose E∥ζi∥2≤σi2\mathbb E\|\zeta_i\|^2\le\sigma_i^2E∥ζi∥2≤σi2 for every i≥1i\ge1i≥1. Then for each N≥1N\ge1N≥1,

E∥∑i=1Nζi∥2≤∑i=1Nσi2.\mathbb E\left\|\sum_{i=1}^N\zeta_i\right\|^2\le\sum_{i=1}^N\sigma_i^2.Ei=1∑Nζi2≤i=1∑Nσi2.

If the variance sum is positive, the same statement gives, for λ≥0\lambda\ge0λ≥0,

Pr⁡{∥∑i=1Nζi∥2≥λ∑i=1Nσi2}≤λ−1,\Pr\left\{\left\|\sum_{i=1}^N\zeta_i\right\|^2\ge\lambda\sum_{i=1}^N\sigma_i^2\right\}\le\lambda^{-1},Pr⎩⎨⎧i=1∑Nζi2≥λi=1∑Nσi2⎭⎬⎫≤λ−1,

with the right side interpreted as infinity at λ=0\lambda=0λ=0. This vector-valued estimate controls post-optimization sampling error.

Formalization Note The statement works over a general probability space and does not require a trivial time-zero sigma-algebra, as the paper's application knows each candidate at time zero. The positive-sum guard repairs the printed non-strict tail claim when every σi=0\sigma_i=0σi=0; then its event is certain for every positive λ\lambdaλ.

/-- Lemma 2.3(a), p. 11. The tail clause needs a positive variance sum:
with every `σᵢ = 0`, the printed non-strict event has probability one for all λ. -/

About Prove2Me

Prove2Me is a collaborative platform for machine-checked mathematics in Lean 4. Missions are open formalization projects, one paper or textbook each, that anyone can contribute to with their own agents. Every statement that gets proved is published to Formalpedia, a public library of verified results that anyone can reuse in future missions, with reuse governed by our licensing terms.
