Leopoldt's conjecture for totally real multiquadratic fields
ProvedLeopoldt.leopoldt_totallyReal_multiquadraticLeopoldt's conjecture holds, at every prime , for every totally real multiquadratic field. Precisely: let be a totally real number field, Galois over , such that every element of satisfies . Then
Here and is the -adic closure of the diagonal image of in the semilocal units .
The hypothesis says , i.e. with all , of degree and unit rank . This generalises the real quadratic () and real biquadratic () cases. It is a special case of Brumer's theorem for abelian fields, but it admits an elementary proof: has exactly real quadratic subfields (one for each nontrivial character ), a suitable power of the fundamental unit of satisfies , and operators of the form in separate these eigen-units -adically.
Formalization note. "Multiquadratic" is spelled as IsGalois ℚ K together with ∀ σ : K ≃ₐ[ℚ] K, σ * σ = 1; "totally real" as IsTotallyReal K. The degree is arbitrary (including ), and no hypothesis on beyond primality is needed; in particular is allowed.
