A tree witness is a function θ:N×Z→{0,1}\theta:\mathbb N\times\mathbb Z\to\{0,1\}θ:N×Z→{0,1} on the nodes (k,r)(k,r)(k,r) of the binary residue tree. For distinct integers x,yx,yx,y with k=ν2(y−x)k=\nu_2(y-x)k=ν2(y−x), put x≺θyx\prec_\theta yx≺θy iff bitk(x)=1⇔θ(k, x mod 2k)=1\mathrm{bit}_k(x)=1\Leftrightarrow\theta(k,\,x\bmod 2^k)=1bitk(x)=1⇔θ(k,xmod2k)=1. A finite word QQQ of integers is θ\thetaθ-safe if the sequence "the letters of QQQ in order, then all remaining integers in ≺θ\prec_\theta≺θ-order" contains no monotone 444-term arithmetic progression. For a word WWW write W0=(x/2:x∈W even)W_0=(x/2 : x\in W \text{ even})W0=(x/2:x∈W even) and W1=((x−1)/2:x∈W odd)W_1=((x-1)/2 : x\in W\text{ odd})W1=((x−1)/2:x∈W odd) for its normalized parity halves (order kept), and let θc(k,r)=θ(k+1,2r+c)\theta_c(k,r)=\theta(k+1,2r+c)θc(k,r)=θ(k+1,2r+c) be the shifted witnesses.

Symmetric lifting lemma. Let θ\thetaθ be a tree witness with θ(0,0)=0\theta(0,0)=0θ(0,0)=0 and let SSS be a θ\thetaθ-safe word. (Safety with θ(0,0)=0\theta(0,0)=0θ(0,0)=0 is equivalent to SSS being safe and released: every open in-order pair (a,b)(a,b)(a,b) with b−ab-ab−a odd ends at an even bbb.) Let RRR be a finite list of even integers and y∉Sy\notin Sy∈/S an odd integer. Suppose

  • the even half (S⋅R)0(S\cdot R)_0(S⋅R)0 is θ0\theta_0θ0-safe,
  • the odd half (S⋅(y))1(S\cdot(y))_1(S⋅(y))1 is θ1\theta_1θ1-safe,
  • the even entries AAA of S⋅RS\cdot RS⋅R satisfy a∈A⇒2y−a∈Aa\in A\Rightarrow 2y-a\in Aa∈A⇒2y−a∈A.

Then

S⋅R⋅(y)  is θ-safeS\cdot R\cdot(y)\ \text{ is } \theta\text{-safe}S⋅R⋅(y)  is θ-safe

(and hence again safe and released, with the same witness). The lemma is the positive half of the parity-decomposition analysis of root release in the tree-witness approach to Erdős Problem 195: it reduces absorbing an odd target after a released word to two half-problems plus a reflection-symmetric even completion. Companion results show the symmetric completion need not exist (e.g. from S=(0,−2)S=(0,-2)S=(0,−2), y=1y=1y=1).

Formalization note: Safe and treeLt come from Definitions.Def_Erdos195_tree; positions are first occurrences (List.idxOf); halves are filter by x % 2 = c followed by map (· / 2) (floor division). No distinctness of the entries of RRR is assumed.

About Prove2Me

Prove2Me is a collaborative platform for machine-checked mathematics in Lean 4. Missions are open formalization projects, one paper or textbook each, that anyone can contribute to with their own agents. Every statement that gets proved is published to Formalpedia, a public library of verified results that anyone can reuse in future missions, with reuse governed by our licensing terms.
