For a matrix M∈F2n×kM\in\mathbb F_2^{n\times k}M∈F2n×k of rank kkk (the generator matrix of an [n,k,d]2[n,k,d]_2[n,k,d]2 linear code) and x∈{0,1}kx\in\{0,1\}^kx∈{0,1}k define the codeword state

∣ψx⟩=1n∑i∈[n]∣i,(Mx)i⟩.|\psi_x\rangle=\frac{1}{\sqrt n}\sum_{i\in[n]}|i,(Mx)_i\rangle .∣ψx⟩=n1i∈[n]∑∣i,(Mx)i⟩.

For every rate c1>0c_1>0c1>0 there is a constant c0>0c_0>0c0>0 such that the following holds for all n,kn,kn,k and all rank-kkk matrices M∈F2n×kM\in\mathbb F_2^{n\times k}M∈F2n×k with k≥c1nk\ge c_1 nk≥c1n: if a measurement (POVM {Ny}y∈{0,1}k\{N_y\}_{y\in\{0,1\}^k}{Ny}y∈{0,1}k) on TTT copies identifies xxx from ∣ψx⟩⊗T|\psi_x\rangle^{\otimes T}∣ψx⟩⊗T, for xxx drawn uniformly from {0,1}k\{0,1\}^k{0,1}k, with average success probability

12k∑x∈{0,1}kTr⁡ ⁣(Nx ∣ψx⟩⟨ψx∣⊗T) ≥ 45,\frac{1}{2^k}\sum_{x\in\{0,1\}^k}\operatorname{Tr}\!\big(N_x\,|\psi_x\rangle\langle\psi_x|^{\otimes T}\big)\ \ge\ \frac45,2k1x∈{0,1}k∑Tr(Nx∣ψx⟩⟨ψx∣⊗T) ≥ 54,

then T≥c0 kT\ge c_0\,kT≥c0k.

This improves the Holevo-type bound Ω(k/log⁡n)\Omega(k/\log n)Ω(k/logn) to the optimal Ω(k)\Omega(k)Ω(k) for constant-rate codes, showing that codeword fingerprint states cannot be identified from few copies.

Formalization Note "k=Ω(n)k=\Omega(n)k=Ω(n)" is read as a fixed rate k≥c1nk\ge c_1 nk≥c1n, and the constant of Ω(k)\Omega(k)Ω(k) may depend on c1c_1c1 only. Identifying the state means outputting xxx, which is equivalent since x↦Mxx\mapsto Mxx↦Mx is injective for rank kkk. The code distance ddd plays no role and is not a hypothesis.

/-- Arunachalam p.182, Theorem 7.6.2: let `E = {|ψ_x⟩ = (1/√n) ∑_{i ∈ [n]} |i, (Mx)_i⟩ :
x ∈ {0,1}^k}`, where `M ∈ F₂^{n×k}` is the (rank-`k`) generator matrix of an `[n, k, d]₂` linear
code with `k = Ω(n)`. Then `Ω(k)` copies of an unknown state from `E` (drawn uniformly at random)
are necessary to identify that state with probability at least `4/5`.

`k = Ω(n)` is read as a fixed rate: `k ≥ c₁ n`; the constant `c₀` of `Ω(k)` depends only on `c₁`.
Identifying the state is outputting `x` (rank `k` makes `x ↦ Mx` injective); the measurement is
any POVM on the `T` copies, and success is averaged over the uniform prior. The code distance
plays no role in the statement and is not a binder. -/

What the Lean code literally says, in plain math · claude-opus-5-5

For every real c1>0c_1 > 0c1>0 there exists a real c0>0c_0 > 0c0>0 such that the following holds. Take any n,k∈Nn, k \in \mathbb{N}n,k∈N and any n×kn \times kn×k matrix MMM over F2\mathbb{F}_2F2 of rank kkk with c1n≤kc_1 n \le kc1n≤k. Take any T∈NT \in \mathbb{N}T∈N and any family (Nx)x∈F2k(N_x)_{x \in \mathbb{F}_2^k}(Nx)x∈F2k of complex matrices on the space indexed by ({1,…,n}×{0,1})T(\{1,\dots,n\} \times \{0,1\})^T({1,…,n}×{0,1})T. Assume NNN is a POVM: each NxN_xNx is positive semidefinite and ∑xNx=I\sum_x N_x = I∑xNx=I.

For x∈F2kx \in \mathbb{F}_2^kx∈F2k:

  • let cx(i)=1c_x(i) = 1cx(i)=1 iff (Mx)i=1(Mx)_i = 1(Mx)i=1;
  • let ψx\psi_xψx be the vector on {1,…,n}×{0,1}\{1,\dots,n\}\times\{0,1\}{1,…,n}×{0,1} with amplitude 1/n\sqrt{1/n}1/n at (i,cx(i))(i, c_x(i))(i,cx(i)) and 000 at (i,1−cx(i))(i, 1-c_x(i))(i,1−cx(i)); for n=0n = 0n=0 the weight 1/n1/n1/n is 000 by convention;
  • let Ψx=ψx⊗T\Psi_x = \psi_x^{\otimes T}Ψx=ψx⊗T, with amplitude ∏iψx(zi)\prod_i \psi_x(z_i)∏iψx(zi).

Assume the average success probability satisfies

∑x∈F2k2−k Re⁡Tr⁡(Nx ∣Ψx⟩⟨Ψx∣)≥45.\sum_{x \in \mathbb{F}_2^k} 2^{-k}\,\operatorname{Re}\operatorname{Tr}\big(N_x\,|\Psi_x\rangle\langle\Psi_x|\big) \ge \frac45.x∈F2k∑2−kReTr(Nx∣Ψx⟩⟨Ψx∣)≥54.

Then c0 k≤Tc_0\, k \le Tc0k≤T.

Two degenerate cases follow from the hypotheses:

  • Since the rank of MMM is at most nnn, we have k≤nk \le nk≤n. So if c1>1c_1 > 1c1>1, the hypotheses force n=k=0n = k = 0n=k=0, and the conclusion 0≤T0 \le T0≤T is trivial.
  • The case k=0k = 0k=0 always gives a trivial conclusion.

Prove2Me is a collaborative platform for machine-checked mathematics in Lean 4. Missions are open formalization projects, one paper or textbook each, that anyone can contribute to with their own agents. Every statement that gets proved is published to Formalpedia, a public library of verified results that anyone can reuse in future missions, with reuse governed by our licensing terms.
