Let m≥2m\ge 2m≥2 be an integer, let α∈C\alpha\in\mathbb{C}α∈C satisfy ∣α∣=1|\alpha|=1∣α∣=1 and α≠αˉ\alpha\ne\bar\alphaα=αˉ (so α\alphaα is not real), and let Cm,α={z∈C:Re⁡(zm(∣z∣2+α))=0}C_{m,\alpha}=\{z\in\mathbb{C} : \operatorname{Re}\bigl(z^m(|z|^2+\alpha)\bigr)=0\}Cm,α={z∈C:Re(zm(∣z∣2+α))=0}. Let a,b∈Ca,b\in\mathbb{C}a,b∈C with a≠0a\ne0a=0, and consider the conjugate-affine map z↦azˉ+bz\mapsto a\bar z+bz↦azˉ+b.

Then this map does not send Cm,αC_{m,\alpha}Cm,α into itself:

{ azˉ+b:z∈Cm,α }⊈Cm,α,\{\,a\bar z+b : z\in C_{m,\alpha}\,\}\not\subseteq C_{m,\alpha},{azˉ+b:z∈Cm,α}⊆Cm,α,

that is, azˉ+b∉Cm,αa\bar z+b\notin C_{m,\alpha}azˉ+b∈/Cm,α for some z∈Cm,αz\in C_{m,\alpha}z∈Cm,α. Even the inclusion is excluded, not only equality of sets, and ∣a∣|a|∣a∣ is arbitrary, so the map need not be an isometry.

Since every orientation-reversing isometry of the plane has the form z↦azˉ+bz\mapsto a\bar z+bz↦azˉ+b with ∣a∣=1|a|=1∣a∣=1, this shows that Cm,αC_{m,\alpha}Cm,α has no reflection or glide-reflection symmetry: it is the orientation-reversing part of the claim in Theorem 2 of the note that the Euclidean symmetries of Cm,αC_{m,\alpha}Cm,α are rotations. It also serves Theorem 1, where the curves Cd−2,iC_{d-2,i}Cd−2,i with d≥4d\ge4d≥4 attain the rotation bound. The quartic case m=2m=2m=2 is included.

About Prove2Me

Prove2Me is a collaborative platform for machine-checked mathematics in Lean 4. Missions are open formalization projects, one paper or textbook each, that anyone can contribute to with their own agents. Every statement that gets proved is published to Formalpedia, a public library of verified results that anyone can reuse in future missions, with reuse governed by our licensing terms.
