All matrices and spans are over R\mathbb RR, and the Lie bracket is [X,Y]=XY−YX[X,Y]=XY-YX[X,Y]=XY−YX. The source uses one-based matrix indices. Write FpqF_{pq}Fpq for the matrix unit, Jpq=Fpq−FqpJ_{pq}=F_{pq}-F_{qp}Jpq=Fpq−Fqp and Zpq=Fpq+FqpZ_{pq}=F_{pq}+F_{qp}Zpq=Fpq+Fqp. Here rank means Lie rank, and a Cartan subalgebra means a nilpotent, self-normalizing Lie subalgebra.

Let LLL be the real matrix Lie algebra generated by the literal compact Bg2 family on PDF page 12; bib_ibi denotes its iiith displayed matrix. Then

rank⁡L=2,(b1+5b5,b1+5b9) is a basis of a Cartan subalgebra of L.\operatorname{rank}L=2,\qquad (b_1+5b_5,b_1+5b_9)\text{ is a basis of a Cartan subalgebra of }L.rankL=2,(b1+5b5,b1+5b9) is a basis of a Cartan subalgebra of L.

This is the second page-14 output, extending the starting element b1+5b5b_1+5b_5b1+5b5. Both occurrences of b1b_1b1 and both factors 555 are retained.

The explicit family is asserted to be linearly independent and to span the indicated subalgebra; these properties are conclusions. This records the mathematical assertion accompanying the source output.

What the Lean code literally says, in plain math · gpt-6.1-sol

In M8(R)M_8(\mathbb R)M8(R), with rows and columns numbered 1,…,81,\ldots,81,…,8, let EpqE_{pq}Epq be the matrix unit and put Jpq=Epq−EqpJ_{pq}=E_{pq}-E_{qp}Jpq=Epq−Eqp. Let LLL be the smallest real vector subspace closed under [X,Y]=XY−YX[X,Y]=XY-YX[X,Y]=XY−YX and containing the matrices

J23+J67, J24+J68, J25+J74, J26+J84, J27+J45, J28+J46, J34+J78, J35+J46, J36+J54, J37+J84, J38+J47, J56+J78, J57+J86, J58+J67.J_{23}+J_{67},\ J_{24}+J_{68},\ J_{25}+J_{74},\ J_{26}+J_{84},\ J_{27}+J_{45},\ J_{28}+J_{46},\ J_{34}+J_{78},\ J_{35}+J_{46},\ J_{36}+J_{54},\ J_{37}+J_{84},\ J_{38}+J_{47},\ J_{56}+J_{78},\ J_{57}+J_{86},\ J_{58}+J_{67}.J23+J67, J24+J68, J25+J74, J26+J84, J27+J45, J28+J46, J34+J78, J35+J46, J36+J54, J37+J84, J38+J47, J56+J78, J57+J86, J58+J67.

The real Lie algebra LLL has rank 222, and there exists a Lie subalgebra HHH of LLL that is nilpotent and equals its normalizer in LLL, such that the ordered pair

(J23+J67+5(J27+J45), J23+J67+5(J36+J54))\bigl( J_{23}+J_{67}+5(J_{27}+J_{45}),\ J_{23}+J_{67}+5(J_{36}+J_{54}) \bigr)(J23+J67+5(J27+J45), J23+J67+5(J36+J54))

is linearly independent over R\mathbb RR and has real linear span exactly the image of HHH in M8(R)M_8(\mathbb R)M8(R).

About Prove2Me

Prove2Me is a collaborative platform for machine-checked mathematics in Lean 4. Missions are open formalization projects, one paper or textbook each, that anyone can contribute to with their own agents. Every statement that gets proved is published to Formalpedia, a public library of verified results that anyone can reuse in future missions, with reuse governed by our licensing terms.
