Let n∈Nn\in\mathbb{N}n∈N and r>0r>0r>0, and let M:Nn×Nn→CM:\mathbb{N}^n\times\mathbb{N}^n\to\mathbb{C}M:Nn×Nn→C be a matrix indexed by multi-indices. For p∈Nnp\in\mathbb{N}^np∈Nn and a mode jjj write p−ejp-e_jp−ej for ppp with its jjj-th entry decreased by one (truncated at 000). Suppose:

  1. (thermal balance) for every mode jjj and all p,b∈Nnp,b\in\mathbb{N}^np,b∈Nn with pj>0p_j>0pj>0,
(r+1)pj  M(p,b)=rbj  M(p−ej, b−ej);(r+1)\sqrt{p_j}\;M(p,b)=r\sqrt{b_j}\;M(p-e_j,\,b-e_j);(r+1)pjM(p,b)=rbjM(p−ej,b−ej);
  1. (Hermitian) M(b,p)=M(p,b)‾M(b,p)=\overline{M(p,b)}M(b,p)=M(p,b) for all p,bp,bp,b;
  2. (normalized) ∑pRe⁡M(p,p)=1\sum_{p}\operatorname{Re}M(p,p)=1∑pReM(p,p)=1 (a convergent series).

Then for all p,b∈Nnp,b\in\mathbb{N}^np,b∈Nn

M(p,b)={∏j=1n1r+1(rr+1)pj,p=b,0,p≠b.M(p,b)=\begin{cases}\displaystyle\prod_{j=1}^n\frac1{r+1}\Bigl(\frac r{r+1}\Bigr)^{p_j},&p=b,\\ 0,&p\neq b.\end{cases}M(p,b)=⎩⎨⎧j=1∏nr+11(r+1r)pj,0,p=b,p=b.

Condition 1 is the number-basis form of the operator identity (r+1) ajM=r Maj(r+1)\,a_jM=r\,Ma_j(r+1)ajM=rMaj for every mode. The theorem says that the nnn-mode thermal state with mean photon number rrr per mode is the unique normalized Hermitian matrix satisfying this balance, which is how vanishing defects identify limiting states as thermal.

Formalization Note The balance is ThermalRecurrence.Balance r M, where lower p j subtracts one in natural numbers; when bj=0b_j=0bj=0 the right side carries the factor 0=0\sqrt0=00=0, so the truncation is harmless. The value on the diagonal is QuantumTrace.thermalWeight n r p.

About Prove2Me

Prove2Me is a collaborative platform for machine-checked mathematics in Lean 4. Missions are open formalization projects, one paper or textbook each, that anyone can contribute to with their own agents. Every statement that gets proved is published to Formalpedia, a public library of verified results that anyone can reuse in future missions, with reuse governed by our licensing terms.
