Let T≥1T\ge1T≥1 and run Algorithm 6.1 on a nonempty closed convex set V⊆int⁡XV\subseteq\operatorname{int}XV⊆intX with a proper, closed regularizer ψ\psiψ that is λ\lambdaλ-strongly convex on VVV, λ>0\lambda>0λ>0. Let gtg_tgt be the selected subgradient of loss ℓt\ell_tℓt at xtx_txt, and BψB_\psiBψ the regularizer's Bregman divergence. If 0<ηt+1≤ηt0<\eta_{t+1}\le\eta_t0<ηt+1≤ηt for t<Tt<Tt<T, then for every u∈Vu\in Vu∈V,

∑t=1T(ℓt(xt)−ℓt(u))≤max⁡1≤t≤TBψ(u;xt)ηT+12λ∑t=1Tηt∥gt∥∗2.\sum_{t=1}^T\bigl(\ell_t(x_t)-\ell_t(u)\bigr) \le\frac{\max_{1\le t\le T}B_\psi(u;x_t)}{\eta_T} +\frac1{2\lambda}\sum_{t=1}^T\eta_t\|g_t\|_*^2.t=1∑T(ℓt(xt)−ℓt(u))≤ηTmax1≤t≤TBψ(u;xt)+2λ1t=1∑Tηt∥gt∥∗2.

The theorem controls regret against each fixed competitor using the geometry of ψ\psiψ and the dual norms of the observed subgradients. Its constant-step conclusion is recorded as a companion item.

Formalization Note The finite maximum is taken over the nonempty round set {1,…,T}\{1,\ldots,T\}{1,…,T}; Lean's total supremum on an empty real set is not used. Steps and strong-convexity modulus are positive. The setting assumes the book's condition (6.5) or (6.6) from Lemma 6.10. Losses are real-valued on VVV and the chosen subgradients satisfy the relative inequality on VVV.

About Prove2Me

Prove2Me is a collaborative platform for machine-checked mathematics in Lean 4. Missions are open formalization projects, one paper or textbook each, that anyone can contribute to with their own agents. Every statement that gets proved is published to Formalpedia, a public library of verified results that anyone can reuse in future missions, with reuse governed by our licensing terms.
