Under the hypotheses of Eq. (3.11) (pairs in memory with sj≠0s_j\neq0sj=0 and yjy_jyj a subsampled-Hessian product, M,t≥1M,t\ge1M,t≥1, m~=min⁡{t,M}\tilde m=\min\{t,M\}m~=min{t,M}), put ji=t−m~+ij_i=t-\tilde m+iji=t−m~+i. Then the direct L-BFGS matrices (3.7) satisfy

det⁡(Bt(m~))=det⁡(Bt(0))∏i=1m~yjiTsjisjiTBt(i−1)sji.\det\big(B_t^{(\tilde m)}\big)=\det\big(B_t^{(0)}\big)\prod_{i=1}^{\tilde m}\frac{y_{j_i}^Ts_{j_i}}{s_{j_i}^TB_t^{(i-1)}s_{j_i}} .det(Bt(m~))=det(Bt(0))i=1∏m~sjiTBt(i−1)sjiyjiTsji.

Combined with (3.9) and (3.11), this formula bounds the determinant of Bt+1B_{t+1}Bt+1 away from zero, which with the trace bound gives the uniform eigenvalue bounds of Lemma 3.1.

Formalization Note The paper's second line of (3.12) splits each factor as yTssTs⋅sTssTBs\frac{y^Ts}{s^Ts}\cdot\frac{s^Ts}{s^TBs}sTsyTs⋅sTBssTs; that rearrangement is not restated.

About Prove2Me

Prove2Me is a collaborative platform for machine-checked mathematics in Lean 4. Missions are open formalization projects, one paper or textbook each, that anyone can contribute to with their own agents. Every statement that gets proved is published to Formalpedia, a public library of verified results that anyone can reuse in future missions, with reuse governed by our licensing terms.
