Let KKK be a number field, ppp a prime and σ∈Aut⁡(K/Q)\sigma\in\operatorname{Aut}(K/\mathbb{Q})σ∈Aut(K/Q). The automorphism σ\sigmaσ permutes the primes above ppp and induces isomorphisms of completed fields σw:Kσ−1w→ ∼ Kw\sigma_w:K_{\sigma^{-1}w}\xrightarrow{\ \sim\ }K_wσw:Kσ−1w ∼ Kw; the Galois action on the semilocal units U=∏v∣pOv×U=\prod_{v\mid p}\mathcal{O}_v^\timesU=∏v∣pOv× is (σ⋅x)w=σw(xσ−1w)(\sigma\cdot x)_w=\sigma_w(x_{\sigma^{-1}w})(σ⋅x)w=σw(xσ−1w) (Leopoldt.semilocalGaloisAut).

Theorem. Let x∈Ux\in Ux∈U and w∣pw\mid pw∣p, and assume that the component xσ−1wx_{\sigma^{-1}w}xσ−1w is a principal unit, ∥xσ−1w−1∥<1\|x_{\sigma^{-1}w}-1\|<1∥xσ−1w−1∥<1. Then

log⁡p((σ⋅x)w)=σw(log⁡pxσ−1w).\log_p\bigl((\sigma\cdot x)_w\bigr)=\sigma_w\bigl(\log_p x_{\sigma^{-1}w}\bigr).logp((σ⋅x)w)=σw(logpxσ−1w).

In other words the componentwise ppp-adic logarithm U(1)→∏v∣pKvU^{(1)}\to\prod_{v\mid p}K_vU(1)→∏v∣pKv on principal semilocal units intertwines the Galois action on UUU with the action (σ⋅y)w=σw(yσ−1w)(\sigma\cdot y)_w=\sigma_w(y_{\sigma^{-1}w})(σ⋅y)w=σw(yσ−1w) on ∏v∣pKv=K⊗QQp\prod_{v\mid p}K_v=K\otimes_{\mathbb{Q}}\mathbb{Q}_p∏v∣pKv=K⊗QQp. Consequently the logarithmic image of a Galois-stable group of principal semilocal units is a Zp[G]\mathbb{Z}_p[G]Zp[G]-submodule. The logarithm is log⁡py=lim⁡n(ypn−1)/pn\log_p y=\lim_n (y^{p^n}-1)/p^nlogpy=limn(ypn−1)/pn.

About Prove2Me

Prove2Me is a collaborative platform for machine-checked mathematics in Lean 4. Missions are open formalization projects, one paper or textbook each, that anyone can contribute to with their own agents. Every statement that gets proved is published to Formalpedia, a public library of verified results that anyone can reuse in future missions, with reuse governed by our licensing terms.
