Let HHH be a real Hilbert space, Q(z)=12∥z∥2\mathcal{Q}(z) = \tfrac12\|z\|^2Q(z)=21∥z∥2, and φ:H→[−∞,+∞]\varphi : H \to [-\infty, +\infty]φ:H→[−∞,+∞]. The following three properties are equivalent:

  1. φ∈Γ0(H)\varphi \in \Gamma_0(H)φ∈Γ0(H) and φ\varphiφ is less convex than Q\mathcal{Q}Q;
  2. φ∈Γ0(H)\varphi \in \Gamma_0(H)φ∈Γ0(H) and the dual function of φ\varphiφ is more convex than Q\mathcal{Q}Q;
  3. φ\varphiφ is the primitive of a prox map: there is g∈Γ0(H)g \in \Gamma_0(H)g∈Γ0(H) such that, with fff the dual function of ggg,
φ(z)=12∥prox⁡gz∥2+f(prox⁡fz)for all z∈H.\varphi(z) = \tfrac12 \|\operatorname{prox}_g z\|^2 + f(\operatorname{prox}_f z) \quad \text{for all } z \in H.φ(z)=21∥proxgz∥2+f(proxfz)for all z∈H.

The proposition describes the primitives of prox maps intrinsically, without reference to ggg. Together with Proposition 10.b it reduces the characterization of prox maps (Corollary 10.c) to a statement about subgradients.

Formalization Note The equivalence is stated as List.TFAE. Property 3 does not itself assume φ∈Γ0(H)\varphi \in \Gamma_0(H)φ∈Γ0(H), as in the paper; "less/more convex than Q\mathcal{Q}Q" uses an auxiliary convex function with values in ]−∞,+∞]]-\infty, +\infty]]−∞,+∞] (Définition 9.b).

Let HHH be a real Hilbert space and let φ:H→[−∞,+∞]\varphi:H\to[-\infty,+\infty]φ:H→[−∞,+∞] be arbitrary, with no hypotheses. The statement asserts that the following three conditions are equivalent.

  1. φ∈Γ0(H)\varphi\in\Gamma_0(H)φ∈Γ0(H), and there is a γ\gammaγ with the following properties: γ\gammaγ never takes the value −∞-\infty−∞, has a convex real epigraph, and satisfies φ(z)+γ(z)=12∥z∥2\varphi(z)+\gamma(z)=\frac12\|z\|^2φ(z)+γ(z)=21∥z∥2 for all zzz. Under the [−∞,+∞][-\infty,+\infty][−∞,+∞] addition rules, this forces φ\varphiφ and γ\gammaγ to be finite everywhere, so the condition means that 12∥⋅∥2−φ\frac12\|\cdot\|^2-\varphi21∥⋅∥2−φ is a real convex function.
  2. φ∈Γ0(H)\varphi\in\Gamma_0(H)φ∈Γ0(H), and there is a γ\gammaγ that never takes the value −∞-\infty−∞, has a convex real epigraph (the value +∞+\infty+∞ is allowed), and satisfies
φ∗(y)=12∥y∥2+γ(y)for all y,where φ∗(y)=sup⁡x(⟨x,y⟩−φ(x)).\varphi^*(y)=\tfrac12\|y\|^2+\gamma(y)\quad\text{for all }y,\qquad\text{where }\varphi^*(y)=\sup_x\big(\langle x,y\rangle-\varphi(x)\big).φ∗(y)=21∥y∥2+γ(y)for all y,where φ∗(y)=xsup(⟨x,y⟩−φ(x)).
  1. There is a g∈Γ0(H)g\in\Gamma_0(H)g∈Γ0(H) such that, for every zzz,
φ(z)=12∥prox⁡g(z)∥2+re⁡(g∗(prox⁡g∗(z))).\varphi(z)=\tfrac12\|\operatorname{prox}_g(z)\|^2+\operatorname{re}\big(g^*(\operatorname{prox}_{g^*}(z))\big).φ(z)=21∥proxg(z)∥2+re(g∗(proxg∗(z))).

Here prox⁡h(z)\operatorname{prox}_h(z)proxh(z) is a chosen minimizer of u↦12∥u−z∥2+h(u)u\mapsto\frac12\|u-z\|^2+h(u)u↦21∥u−z∥2+h(u) (or 000 if none exists), and re⁡(±∞)=0\operatorname{re}(\pm\infty)=0re(±∞)=0.

Membership in Γ0(H)\Gamma_0(H)Γ0(H) means: never −∞-\infty−∞, finite somewhere, convex real epigraph, and lower semicontinuous.

Degenerate cases.

  • Condition 3 does not explicitly require φ∈Γ0(H)\varphi\in\Gamma_0(H)φ∈Γ0(H); the equivalence asserts that it follows.
  • If H={0}H=\{0\}H={0}, condition 1 holds exactly when φ(0)\varphi(0)φ(0) is real. The equivalence then claims the same for conditions 2 and 3.

About Prove2Me

Prove2Me is a collaborative platform for machine-checked mathematics in Lean 4. Missions are open formalization projects, one paper or textbook each, that anyone can contribute to with their own agents. Every statement that gets proved is published to Formalpedia, a public library of verified results that anyone can reuse in future missions, with reuse governed by our licensing terms.
