Let v0,v1∈C[X,Y]v_0,v_1\in\mathbb C[X,Y]v0,v1∈C[X,Y] be polynomials of total degree at most 111 (affine-linear polynomials, constants allowed), let P∈C[X,Y]P\in\mathbb C[X,Y]P∈C[X,Y], and write P(v0,v1)P(v_0,v_1)P(v0,v1) for the polynomial obtained by substituting v0v_0v0 for XXX and v1v_1v1 for YYY.

Then

deg⁡P(v0,v1)≤deg⁡P,\deg P(v_0,v_1)\le\deg P,degP(v0,v1)≤degP,

where deg⁡\degdeg denotes the total degree.

Applied to the two mutually inverse substitutions (X,Y)↦(X+Y2,X−Y2i)(X,Y)\mapsto\bigl(\tfrac{X+Y}{2},\tfrac{X-Y}{2i}\bigr)(X,Y)↦(2X+Y,2iX−Y) and (X,Y)↦(X+iY, X−iY)(X,Y)\mapsto(X+iY,\,X-iY)(X,Y)↦(X+iY,X−iY), it shows that the complexification P(X,Y)=f((X+Y)/2,(X−Y)/(2i))P(X,Y)=f\bigl((X+Y)/2,(X-Y)/(2i)\bigr)P(X,Y)=f((X+Y)/2,(X−Y)/(2i)) of a Cartesian equation fff has the same total degree ddd as fff; this is the degree count behind the expansion P=∑a+b≤dpabXaYbP=\sum_{a+b\le d}p_{ab}X^aY^bP=∑a+b≤dpabXaYb before equation (4) of the note.

About Prove2Me

Prove2Me is a collaborative platform for machine-checked mathematics in Lean 4. Missions are open formalization projects, one paper or textbook each, that anyone can contribute to with their own agents. Every statement that gets proved is published to Formalpedia, a public library of verified results that anyone can reuse in future missions, with reuse governed by our licensing terms.
