For every real exponent p>1p>1p>1, there exist real numbers m,Mm,Mm,M with 0<m≤M0<m\le M0<m≤M such that, for every pair of finite-dimensional complex inner-product spaces G,KG,KG,K, the Schatten ppp-norm on complex-linear maps G→KG\to KG→K satisfies Hlawka's inequality with constant M/mM/mM/m: writing ∥⋅∥p\|\cdot\|_p∥⋅∥p for the Schatten ppp-norm,

∀ x,y,z:G→K,∥x∥p+∥y∥p+∥z∥p−∥x+y+z∥p≤Mm[(∥x∥p+∥y∥p−∥x+y∥p)+(∥x∥p+∥z∥p−∥x+z∥p)+(∥y∥p+∥z∥p−∥y+z∥p)].\begin{aligned} &\forall\, x,y,z : G\to K,\\ &\|x\|_p+\|y\|_p+\|z\|_p-\|x+y+z\|_p\\ &\quad\le\frac{M}{m}\Big[\big(\|x\|_p+\|y\|_p-\|x+y\|_p\big)\\ &\qquad\qquad+\big(\|x\|_p+\|z\|_p-\|x+z\|_p\big)\\ &\qquad\qquad+\big(\|y\|_p+\|z\|_p-\|y+z\|_p\big)\Big]. \end{aligned}∀x,y,z:G→K,∥x∥p+∥y∥p+∥z∥p−∥x+y+z∥p≤mM[(∥x∥p+∥y∥p−∥x+y∥p)+(∥x∥p+∥z∥p−∥x+z∥p)+(∥y∥p+∥z∥p−∥y+z∥p)].

Crucially, mmm and MMM depend only on ppp, not on the spaces G,KG,KG,K or their dimensions.

This is the existence half of the project's main classification result: it packages a scalar compactness bound, a spectral lift, a Hermitian dilation, a radial Mazur map, and the classical Hilbert-space Hlawka inequality into a single dimension-independent Hlawka constant M/mM/mM/m for the Schatten ppp-norm, for every interior exponent p>1p>1p>1. It is reused unchanged as the interior-existence conjunct of the top-level classification theorem, which additionally records the failure of any such constant at p=1p=1p=1 and p=∞p=\inftyp=∞.

About Prove2Me

Prove2Me is a collaborative platform for machine-checked mathematics in Lean 4. Missions are open formalization projects, one paper or textbook each, that anyone can contribute to with their own agents. Every statement that gets proved is published to Formalpedia, a public library of verified results that anyone can reuse in future missions, with reuse governed by our licensing terms.
