Consider the symmetric block matrix

M=[ABB⊤C]M = \begin{bmatrix} A & B\\ B^\top & C\end{bmatrix}M=[AB⊤BC]

with AAA positive definite (A≻0A \succ 0A≻0) and CCC symmetric. If the Schur complement is strictly copositive,

C−B⊤A−1B≻C0,C - B^\top A^{-1}B \succ_{\mathcal C} 0,C−B⊤A−1B≻C0,

then M≻C0M \succ_{\mathcal C} 0M≻C0, i.e. v⊤Mv>0v^\top M v > 0v⊤Mv>0 for every nonzero v≥0v \ge 0v≥0.

This is the copositive analogue of the Schur complement criterion for positive definiteness; it is used to build the Slater point in the proof of Theorem 4.

Formalization Note The blocks are indexed by arbitrary finite types. A≻0A \succ 0A≻0 is Mathlib's PosDef (symmetric, positive definite), which together with the symmetry of CCC makes MMM symmetric, as the paper requires.

/-- Lemma 4 (copositive Schur complements), Hanasusanto–Kuhn, arXiv:1609.07505v3, p. 16: for the
symmetric matrix `M = [[A, B], [Bᵀ, C]]` with `A ≻ 0` (positive definite), `M ≻_C 0` holds if

About Prove2Me

Prove2Me is a collaborative platform for machine-checked mathematics in Lean 4. Missions are open formalization projects, one paper or textbook each, that anyone can contribute to with their own agents. Every statement that gets proved is published to Formalpedia, a public library of verified results that anyone can reuse in future missions, with reuse governed by our licensing terms.
