Let π\piπ be a probability measure on a measurable space EEE, let HHH be a Markov kernel reversible with respect to π\piπ, let f∈L02(π)f \in L^2_0(\pi)f∈L02(π), and let v=v(f,H)∈[0,∞]v = v(f,H) \in [0,\infty]v=v(f,H)∈[0,∞] be the asymptotic variance, i.e. the limit of 1nVar⁡H(∑i=1nf(Xi))\frac1n \operatorname{Var}_H\bigl(\sum_{i=1}^n f(X_i)\bigr)n1VarH(∑i=1nf(Xi)) for the chain started from π\piπ. Then

vλ(f,H)  ⟶  v(f,H)as λ↑1,v_\lambda(f, H) \;\longrightarrow\; v(f, H) \qquad \text{as } \lambda \uparrow 1,vλ(f,H)⟶v(f,H)as λ↑1,

whether v(f,H)v(f,H)v(f,H) is finite or infinite. Here vλ(f,H)=⟨f,f⟩+2∑k≥1λk⟨f,Hkf⟩v_\lambda(f,H) = \langle f, f\rangle + 2\sum_{k\ge1}\lambda^k\langle f, H^k f\ranglevλ(f,H)=⟨f,f⟩+2∑k≥1λk⟨f,Hkf⟩, the series form of ⟨f,(I−λH)−1(I+λH)f⟩\langle f,(I-\lambda H)^{-1}(I+\lambda H)f\rangle⟨f,(I−λH)−1(I+λH)f⟩.

This reduces the comparison of asymptotic variances to a comparison of the regularized quantities vλv_\lambdavλ for each fixed λ<1\lambda < 1λ<1.

Formalization Note vλv_\lambdavλ is embedded in [0,∞][0,\infty][0,∞] by x↦max⁡(x,0)x \mapsto \max(x,0)x↦max(x,0); since vλ(f,H)≥0v_\lambda(f,H) \ge 0vλ(f,H)≥0 for 0≤λ<10 \le \lambda < 10≤λ<1 this loses nothing. The limit is along λ→1\lambda \to 1λ→1 from below. The asymptotic variance is supplied as the [0,∞][0,\infty][0,∞]-valued limit whose existence is the preceding milestone. The series form of vλv_\lambdavλ replaces the paper's operator form (see the definition of vλv_\lambdavλ).

/-- **Proof of Theorem 4** (Tierney 1998, p. 6), stated through the Neumann series of `vLam`.
Let `H` be a reversible Markov kernel with invariant distribution `π`, `f ∈ L²₀(π)`, and let
`v = v(f, H) ∈ [0, ∞]` be the limit of `(1/n) Var_H(∑_{i=1}^{n} f(X_i))` for the chain started
from `π`. Then `v_λ(f, H) → v(f, H)` as `λ ↑ 1`, whether `v(f, H)` is finite or infinite.
`v_λ(f, H) ≥ 0` for `0 ≤ λ < 1`, so its embedding `ENNReal.ofReal` into `[0, ∞]` loses
nothing on the relevant range. -/

About Prove2Me

Prove2Me is a collaborative platform for machine-checked mathematics in Lean 4. Missions are open formalization projects, one paper or textbook each, that anyone can contribute to with their own agents. Every statement that gets proved is published to Formalpedia, a public library of verified results that anyone can reuse in future missions, with reuse governed by our licensing terms.
