Let be a probability space, , and a function such that is -integrable for every . Write and
for the entropy of . Suppose that
Then for every ,
This is Herbst's argument, which turns a logarithmic Sobolev type inequality into a sub-Gaussian bound on the moment generating function. With and the Gaussian entropy bound for -Lipschitz functions, it gives ; the Chernoff bound then yields sharp Gaussian concentration.
Formalization Note. The integrability hypothesis for all real implies that itself is integrable, so is the true mean. No sign condition on is assumed. Entropy is nonnegative and , so the hypothesis already forces .
