Deligne (pp. 1–2): "If ZZZ is a closed analytic subspace of XXX, of complex codimension ppp, ZZZ is an integral cycle and, by Poincaré duality, defines a class cl(Z)\mathrm{cl}(Z)cl(Z) in H2p(X,Z)H^{2p}(X,\mathbb{Z})H2p(X,Z). The integration current on ZZZ is a closed (p,p)(p,p)(p,p)-form with generalized function coefficients, representing the image of cl(Z)\mathrm{cl}(Z)cl(Z) in H2p(X,C)H^{2p}(X,\mathbb{C})H2p(X,C)." By Chow's theorem (Remark (i)) algebraic cycles and closed analytic subspaces coincide.

Let X⊂PN(C)X\subset\mathbb{P}^N(\mathbb{C})X⊂PN(C) be non-singular of dimension nnn, let p≤np\le np≤n, and let Z⊂XZ\subset XZ⊂X be an irreducible algebraic subvariety of dimension n−pn-pn−p. Then there is exactly one class c∈H2p(X,C)c\in H^{2p}(X,\mathbb{C})c∈H2p(X,C) such that

∫Xc∧η=∫Zηfor every closed (2n−2p)-form η on X,\int_X c\wedge\eta=\int_Z\eta\qquad\text{for every closed }(2n-2p)\text{-form }\eta\text{ on }X,∫Xc∧η=∫Zηfor every closed (2n−2p)-form η on X,

where ∫Z\int_Z∫Z is the integral over the smooth locus of ZZZ with its complex orientation. This class is cl(Z)\mathrm{cl}(Z)cl(Z).

Existence says that the integration current of ZZZ is a closed current cohomologous to a smooth form (Lelong's theorem on the finiteness and closedness of the current of integration, plus de Rham's theorem for currents); uniqueness is Poincaré duality, the non-degeneracy of the pairing H2p×H2n−2p→CH^{2p}\times H^{2n-2p}\to\mathbb{C}H2p×H2n−2p→C. Without this theorem the predicate "is the class of ZZZ" used in the Hodge conjecture would have no witness.

Formalization Note ∫Zη\int_Z\eta∫Zη integrates η\etaη evaluated on a positively oriented orthonormal frame of the tangent space of ZZZ against the 2(n−p)2(n-p)2(n−p)-dimensional normalised Hausdorff measure on the smooth locus of ZZZ; ∫Xc∧η\int_X c\wedge\eta∫Xc∧η uses a representative of ccc and the 2n2n2n-dimensional measure on XXX. Both quantities are independent of the choices involved, which is part of what a proof must establish.

Shape of the statement

For every choice of natural numbers N,n,pN, n, pN,n,p with p≤np \le np≤n, and every pair of "projective varieties" X,ZX, ZX,Z in the sense defined below (both living in the same ambient PN\mathbb{P}^NPN-model), if

  • XXX is "nonsingular of dimension nnn" (definition below),
  • the cone of ZZZ is contained in the cone of XXX (as subsets of CN+1\mathbb{C}^{N+1}CN+1),
  • ZZZ is "irreducible" (definition below), and
  • the "dimension" of ZZZ equals n−pn - pn−p (natural-number subtraction; harmless here because p≤np \le np≤n),

then there exists a unique element ccc of the complex vector space H2p(X)H^{2p}(X)H2p(X) (the custom cohomology defined below) such that ccc "is a cycle class of ZZZ" in the custom sense IsCycleClassX(Z,n,p,c)\mathrm{IsCycleClass}_X(Z, n, p, c)IsCycleClassX(Z,n,p,c) spelled out below. Uniqueness means: any c′c'c′ in H2p(X)H^{2p}(X)H2p(X) satisfying the same property is equal to ccc as an element of the quotient space H2p(X)H^{2p}(X)H2p(X) (i.e. two closed representatives of ccc and c′c'c′ differ by an element of the "exact forms" submodule). Nothing else is asserted; in particular ccc ranges over the whole complex vector space H2p(X)H^{2p}(X)H2p(X) with no rationality, integrality or Hodge-type condition in the statement.

Everything below unfolds the custom notions to Mathlib primitives.

Ambient objects

  • Coordinates. CoordN:=CN+1\mathrm{Coord}_N := \mathbb{C}^{N+1}CoordN:=CN+1 (functions {0,…,N}→C\{0,\dots,N\}\to\mathbb{C}{0,…,N}→C).
  • Polynomials. PolyN:=\mathrm{Poly}_N :=PolyN:= polynomials over C\mathbb{C}C in the N+1N+1N+1 variables x0,…,xNx_0,\dots,x_Nx0,…,xN.
  • Ambient space. AmbN:=C(N+1)×(N+1)\mathrm{Amb}_N := \mathbb{C}^{(N+1)\times(N+1)}AmbN:=C(N+1)×(N+1), the space of (N+1)×(N+1)(N+1)\times(N+1)(N+1)×(N+1) complex matrices with the ℓ2\ell^2ℓ2 (Hilbert–Schmidt/Frobenius) inner product ⟨A,B⟩=∑i,jAij‾Bij\langle A,B\rangle = \sum_{i,j}\overline{A_{ij}}B_{ij}⟨A,B⟩=∑i,jAijBij; it is a complex inner-product space of real dimension 2(N+1)22(N+1)^22(N+1)2.
  • Projection map. π:CN+1→AmbN\pi:\mathbb{C}^{N+1}\to \mathrm{Amb}_Nπ:CN+1→AmbN,
π(v)ij=vi vj‾∑k∣vk∣2.\pi(v)_{ij} = \frac{v_i\,\overline{v_j}}{\sum_k |v_k|^2}.π(v)ij=∑k∣vk∣2vivj.

For v≠0v\neq 0v=0 this is the rank-one Hermitian projector onto the line Cv\mathbb{C}vCv; it is constant on complex lines through 000. For v=0v=0v=0 the denominator is 000 and division by zero in C\mathbb{C}C returns 000, so π(0)\pi(0)π(0) is the zero matrix (this case never arises below, since cones exclude 000).

  • JJJ-map. For matrices P,AP,AP,A: JP(A):=i (AP−PA)=i[A,P]J_P(A) := i\,(AP - PA) = i[A,P]JP(A):=i(AP−PA)=i[A,P].
  • Real inner product. ⟨a,b⟩R:=Re⁡⟨a,b⟩\langle a,b\rangle_{\mathbb{R}} := \operatorname{Re}\langle a,b\rangle⟨a,b⟩R:=Re⟨a,b⟩ on AmbN\mathrm{Amb}_NAmbN.
  • Zero set. For a set SSS of polynomials, Z(S):={v∈CN+1:Q(v)=0 for all Q∈S}\mathcal{Z}(S) := \{v\in\mathbb{C}^{N+1} : Q(v)=0 \text{ for all } Q\in S\}Z(S):={v∈CN+1:Q(v)=0 for all Q∈S}.

"Projective varieties" and their attributes

A ProjVariety XXX over NNN is a set EXE_XEX of polynomials (no finiteness assumed) together with a proof that every Q∈EXQ\in E_XQ∈EX is homogeneous of some degree dQ∈Nd_Q\in\mathbb{N}dQ∈N (each polynomial may have its own degree; degree 000, i.e. constants, including nonzero constants, is allowed; the zero polynomial counts as homogeneous). Nothing else is recorded.

  • Cone. CX:={v∈CN+1:v≠0, v∈Z(EX)}C_X := \{v\in\mathbb{C}^{N+1} : v\neq 0,\ v\in\mathcal{Z}(E_X)\}CX:={v∈CN+1:v=0, v∈Z(EX)}, the nonzero common zeros of EXE_XEX. It may be empty (e.g. if EXE_XEX contains a nonzero constant).
  • Points. ptsX:=π(CX)⊆AmbN\mathrm{pts}_X := \pi(C_X)\subseteq \mathrm{Amb}_NptsX:=π(CX)⊆AmbN, the set of rank-one projectors onto lines of the cone (a model of the projective variety inside matrix space).
  • Vanishing set. IX:={Q∈PolyN:Q(v)=0 for all v∈CX}I_X := \{Q\in\mathrm{Poly}_N : Q(v)=0 \text{ for all } v\in C_X\}IX:={Q∈PolyN:Q(v)=0 for all v∈CX}; all polynomials (homogeneous or not) vanishing on the cone. If CX=∅C_X=\emptysetCX=∅ then IXI_XIX is all polynomials.
  • Jacobian form. For QQQ and vvv: the C\mathbb{C}C-linear map dQv:CN+1→CdQ_v:\mathbb{C}^{N+1}\to\mathbb{C}dQv:CN+1→C, u↦∑i∂Q∂xi(v) uiu\mapsto\sum_i \frac{\partial Q}{\partial x_i}(v)\,u_iu↦∑i∂xi∂Q(v)ui.
  • Tangent cone. For any v∈CN+1v\in\mathbb{C}^{N+1}v∈CN+1 (not only v∈CXv\in C_Xv∈CX),
TX(v):=⋂Q∈IXker⁡(dQv) ⊆ CN+1,T_X(v) := \bigcap_{Q\in I_X}\ker(dQ_v)\ \subseteq\ \mathbb{C}^{N+1},TX(v):=Q∈IX⋂ker(dQv) ⊆ CN+1,

a complex subspace (the Zariski tangent space of the affine cone at vvv, computed from the full vanishing set IXI_XIX, not from EXE_XEX).

  • IsNonsingular nnn. XXX is nonsingular of dimension nnn iff for every v∈CXv\in C_Xv∈CX, dim⁡CTX(v)=n+1\dim_{\mathbb{C}} T_X(v) = n+1dimCTX(v)=n+1. This is vacuously true when CX=∅C_X=\emptysetCX=∅.
  • Tangent space at a point. For P∈AmbNP\in\mathrm{Amb}_NP∈AmbN,
TX(P):=∑v∈CXπ(v)=PDπv(TX(v)) ⊆ AmbN,\mathcal{T}_X(P) := \sum_{\substack{v\in C_X\\ \pi(v)=P}} D\pi_v\big(T_X(v)\big)\ \subseteq\ \mathrm{Amb}_N,TX(P):=v∈CXπ(v)=P∑Dπv(TX(v)) ⊆ AmbN,

the real subspace spanned by the images of the tangent cones TX(v)T_X(v)TX(v) (viewed as real subspaces) under the real Fréchet derivative Dπv:CN+1→AmbND\pi_v:\mathbb{C}^{N+1}\to\mathrm{Amb}_NDπv:CN+1→AmbN of π\piπ at vvv, summed over all vvv in the fibre of π\piπ over PPP lying in the cone. If no such vvv exists (in particular if P∉ptsXP\notin\mathrm{pts}_XP∈/ptsX) this is the zero subspace. (π\piπ is smooth away from 000, so for v∈CXv\in C_Xv∈CX this is the genuine derivative; it kills the direction Cv\mathbb{C}vCv since π\piπ is constant on complex lines.)

  • IsIrreducible. XXX is irreducible iff CX≠∅C_X\neq\emptysetCX=∅ and for all sets of polynomials S1,S2S_1,S_2S1,S2 (arbitrary, not necessarily homogeneous): if CX⊆Z(S1)∪Z(S2)C_X\subseteq\mathcal{Z}(S_1)\cup\mathcal{Z}(S_2)CX⊆Z(S1)∪Z(S2) then CX⊆Z(S1)C_X\subseteq\mathcal{Z}(S_1)CX⊆Z(S1) or CX⊆Z(S2)C_X\subseteq\mathcal{Z}(S_2)CX⊆Z(S2).
  • Dimension.
dim⁡X:=(inf⁡{dim⁡CTX(v):v∈CX})  −˙  1,\dim X := \Big(\inf\{\dim_{\mathbb{C}} T_X(v) : v\in C_X\}\Big) \;\dot{-}\; 1,dimX:=(inf{dimCTX(v):v∈CX})−˙1,

where the infimum is over a set of natural numbers (so it is a minimum when CX≠∅C_X\neq\emptysetCX=∅, and equals 000 by Mathlib's convention inf⁡∅=0\inf\emptyset = 0inf∅=0 when CX=∅C_X=\emptysetCX=∅), and −˙\dot{-}−˙ is truncated subtraction on N\mathbb{N}N (0−˙1=00\dot{-}1 = 00−˙1=0). So dim⁡X=0\dim X = 0dimX=0 both when the cone is empty and when the minimum tangent rank is 000 or 111.

  • Regular points. regX:=π({v∈CX:dim⁡CTX(v)=dim⁡X+1})\mathrm{reg}_X := \pi\big(\{v\in C_X : \dim_{\mathbb{C}}T_X(v) = \dim X + 1\}\big)regX:=π({v∈CX:dimCTX(v)=dimX+1}): images of cone points whose tangent-cone rank is exactly dim⁡X+1\dim X + 1dimX+1. If the minimum rank mmm over the cone is ≥1\ge 1≥1, then dim⁡X+1=m\dim X + 1 = mdimX+1=m and regX\mathrm{reg}_XregX is the (nonempty) image of the rank-minimising locus. If CX=∅C_X=\emptysetCX=∅, regX=∅\mathrm{reg}_X=\emptysetregX=∅; if m=0m=0m=0 then dim⁡X+1=1≠m\dim X+1 = 1\ne mdimX+1=1=m and regX\mathrm{reg}_XregX could be empty. (For vvv in a cone, vvv itself lies in ker⁡dQv\ker dQ_vkerdQv for every QQQ vanishing on the cone, by Euler's relation applied to the homogeneous components, so in fact m≥1m\ge 1m≥1 whenever the cone is nonempty; the definition does not rely on this.)

Forms and the custom cohomology

  • kkk-forms. ΩNk:=\Omega^k_N := ΩNk:= all functions ω:AmbN→AltRk(AmbN;C)\omega:\mathrm{Amb}_N\to \mathrm{Alt}^k_{\mathbb{R}}(\mathrm{Amb}_N;\mathbb{C})ω:AmbN→AltRk(AmbN;C), where the target is the space of continuous real-multilinear alternating maps (AmbN)k→C(\mathrm{Amb}_N)^k\to\mathbb{C}(AmbN)k→C. No regularity is built in; forms live on the whole ambient matrix space, not on XXX. A 000-form is just a function AmbN→C\mathrm{Amb}_N\to\mathbb{C}AmbN→C. ΩNk\Omega^k_NΩNk is a complex vector space (scalars act on values).
  • Vanishes on XXX. ω∈ΩNk\omega\in\Omega^k_Nω∈ΩNk vanishes on XXX iff for every P∈ptsXP\in\mathrm{pts}_XP∈ptsX and every kkk-tuple (v1,…,vk)(v_1,\dots,v_k)(v1,…,vk) with all vi∈TX(P)v_i\in\mathcal{T}_X(P)vi∈TX(P), ωP(v1,…,vk)=0\omega_P(v_1,\dots,v_k)=0ωP(v1,…,vk)=0. (For k=0k=0k=0 this says ω(P)=0\omega(P)=0ω(P)=0 for all P∈ptsXP\in\mathrm{pts}_XP∈ptsX.)
  • Exterior derivative. dω∈ΩNk+1d\omega\in\Omega^{k+1}_Ndω∈ΩNk+1 is Mathlib's extDeriv: at each point, the alternating (k+1)(k+1)(k+1)-form obtained from the real Fréchet derivative of ω\omegaω, (dω)P(v0,…,vk)=∑i(−1)i (DωP⋅vi)(v0,…,vi^,…,vk)(d\omega)_P(v_0,\dots,v_k)=\sum_i (-1)^i\,(D\omega_P\cdot v_i)(v_0,\dots,\widehat{v_i},\dots,v_k)(dω)P(v0,…,vk)=∑i(−1)i(DωP⋅vi)(v0,…,vi,…,vk); at points where ω\omegaω is not differentiable the derivative is 000. (It is used only inside "vanishes on XXX" conditions, which are insensitive to nonzero normalisation constants.)
  • Smooth. "ω\omegaω is smooth" means C∞C^\inftyC∞ over R\mathbb{R}R as a map from all of AmbN\mathrm{Amb}_NAmbN into the normed space of alternating maps.
  • IsClosedForm. ω∈ΩNk\omega\in\Omega^k_Nω∈ΩNk is closed for XXX iff ω\omegaω is smooth and dωd\omegadω vanishes on XXX (in the tangential sense above). Note ω\omegaω itself is not required to vanish or be anything on XXX; closedness is tested only on TX(P)\mathcal{T}_X(P)TX(P) for P∈ptsXP\in\mathrm{pts}_XP∈ptsX.
  • IsExactForm. For k=0k=0k=0: ω\omegaω is smooth and vanishes on XXX. For k≥1k\ge1k≥1: ω\omegaω is smooth and there exists a smooth α∈ΩNk−1\alpha\in\Omega^{k-1}_Nα∈ΩNk−1 with ω−dα\omega - d\alphaω−dα vanishing on XXX.
  • Closed / exact submodules. CXk:=span⁡C{ω:ω closed for X}\mathcal{C}^k_X := \operatorname{span}_{\mathbb{C}}\{\omega : \omega \text{ closed for } X\}CXk:=spanC{ω:ω closed for X} and EXk:=span⁡C{ω:ω exact for X}\mathcal{E}^k_X := \operatorname{span}_{\mathbb{C}}\{\omega : \omega \text{ exact for } X\}EXk:=spanC{ω:ω exact for X}, both complex subspaces of ΩNk\Omega^k_NΩNk.
  • Cohomology. Hk(X):=H^k(X) :=Hk(X):= the image of CXk\mathcal{C}^k_XCXk under the canonical quotient map ΩNk→ΩNk/EXk\Omega^k_N\to\Omega^k_N/\mathcal{E}^k_XΩNk→ΩNk/EXk; a complex subspace of that quotient. Its elements are classes [ω][\omega][ω] with ω∈CXk\omega\in\mathcal{C}^k_Xω∈CXk, and [ω]=[ω′][\omega]=[\omega'][ω]=[ω′] iff ω−ω′∈EXk\omega-\omega'\in\mathcal{E}^k_Xω−ω′∈EXk. (Nothing in the definition forces EXk⊆CXk\mathcal{E}^k_X\subseteq\mathcal{C}^k_XEXk⊆CXk.)
  • Class. For ω∈CXk\omega\in\mathcal{C}^k_Xω∈CXk, clsX(ω):=[ω]∈Hk(X)\mathrm{cls}_X(\omega) := [\omega]\in H^k(X)clsX(ω):=[ω]∈Hk(X).

Frames, measures, wedge, pairing, integral

  • JJJ-frame. Given a real subspace T⊆AmbNT\subseteq\mathrm{Amb}_NT⊆AmbN, a matrix PPP, and u=(u0,…,um−1)u=(u_0,\dots,u_{m-1})u=(u0,…,um−1) in AmbN\mathrm{Amb}_NAmbN: uuu is a JJJ-frame for (T,P)(T,P)(T,P) iff (i) every ui∈Tu_i\in Tui∈T; (ii) ⟨ui,uj⟩R=δij\langle u_i,u_j\rangle_{\mathbb{R}}=\delta_{ij}⟨ui,uj⟩R=δij (real orthonormality for Re⁡⟨⋅,⋅⟩\operatorname{Re}\langle\cdot,\cdot\rangleRe⟨⋅,⋅⟩); (iii) ⟨ui,JPuj⟩R=0\langle u_i, J_P u_j\rangle_{\mathbb{R}} = 0⟨ui,JPuj⟩R=0 for all i,ji,ji,j. It is not required that JPuj∈TJ_P u_j\in TJPuj∈T, nor that the family span anything. For m=0m=0m=0 the empty family is trivially a JJJ-frame.
  • Chosen frame. frame(T,P,d)∈(AmbN)d\mathrm{frame}(T,P,d)\in(\mathrm{Amb}_N)^dframe(T,P,d)∈(AmbN)d is built as follows. Let u=(u0,…,u⌊d/2⌋−1)u=(u_0,\dots,u_{\lfloor d/2\rfloor-1})u=(u0,…,u⌊d/2⌋−1) be some JJJ-frame for (T,P)(T,P)(T,P) of length ⌊d/2⌋\lfloor d/2\rfloor⌊d/2⌋, chosen by Hilbert's ε\varepsilonε-operator (Classical.epsilon): if at least one such frame exists, uuu is an unspecified one of them; if none exists, uuu is an unspecified arbitrary family in (AmbN)⌊d/2⌋(\mathrm{Amb}_N)^{\lfloor d/2\rfloor}(AmbN)⌊d/2⌋ with no properties at all. The choice is a fixed but unknown function of (T,P,d)(T,P,d)(T,P,d), with no continuity or measurability in PPP. Then, for index k∈{0,…,d−1}k\in\{0,\dots,d-1\}k∈{0,…,d−1}:
frame(T,P,d)k={uk/2k even, ⌊k/2⌋<⌊d/2⌋,JP u(k−1)/2k odd, ⌊k/2⌋<⌊d/2⌋,0otherwise (only when d is odd and k=d−1).\mathrm{frame}(T,P,d)_k = \begin{cases} u_{k/2} & k \text{ even},\ \lfloor k/2\rfloor<\lfloor d/2\rfloor,\\ J_P\,u_{(k-1)/2} & k \text{ odd},\ \lfloor k/2\rfloor<\lfloor d/2\rfloor,\\ 0 & \text{otherwise (only when } d \text{ is odd and } k=d-1).\end{cases}frame(T,P,d)k=⎩⎨⎧uk/2JPu(k−1)/20k even, ⌊k/2⌋<⌊d/2⌋,k odd, ⌊k/2⌋<⌊d/2⌋,otherwise (only when d is odd and k=d−1).

So the frame is the interleaved family (u0,JPu0,u1,JPu1,… )(u_0, J_Pu_0, u_1, J_Pu_1, \dots)(u0,JPu0,u1,JPu1,…), with a trailing zero vector when ddd is odd. In this theorem the frames used have even length (2n2n2n and 2(n−p)2(n-p)2(n−p)), so no zero entry occurs.

  • Volume measure. On AmbN\mathrm{Amb}_NAmbN,
μd:=π⌊d/2⌋⌊d/2⌋!  2d ⋅ Hd,\mu_d := \frac{\pi^{\lfloor d/2\rfloor}}{\lfloor d/2\rfloor!\; 2^{d}}\ \cdot\ \mathcal{H}^{d},μd:=⌊d/2⌋!2dπ⌊d/2⌋ ⋅ Hd,

where Hd\mathcal{H}^dHd is Mathlib's ddd-dimensional Hausdorff measure on the metric space AmbN\mathrm{Amb}_NAmbN (Hilbert–Schmidt metric), which carries no intrinsic normalisation. For even d=2md=2md=2m the constant is πm/(m! 22m)\pi^m/(m!\,2^{2m})πm/(m!22m), i.e. (volume of the unit ddd-ball)/2d/2^d/2d, the classical factor that rescales unnormalised Hausdorff measure to Lebesgue measure on ddd-dimensional Euclidean subspaces; for odd ddd the floor makes the constant differ from that classical factor (odd ddd does not occur in this theorem). For d=0d=0d=0, μ0=H0\mu_0=\mathcal{H}^0μ0=H0 is counting measure.

  • Wedge value. For ω∈ΩNk\omega\in\Omega^k_Nω∈ΩNk, η∈ΩNl\eta\in\Omega^l_Nη∈ΩNl, a point PPP and a family f=(f0,…,fk+l−1)f=(f_0,\dots,f_{k+l-1})f=(f0,…,fk+l−1):
(ω∧η)P(f):=1k! l!∑σ∈Sk+lsgn⁡(σ) ωP(fσ(0),…,fσ(k−1)) ηP(fσ(k),…,fσ(k+l−1)).(\omega\wedge\eta)_P(f) := \frac{1}{k!\,l!}\sum_{\sigma\in S_{k+l}}\operatorname{sgn}(\sigma)\ \omega_P\big(f_{\sigma(0)},\dots,f_{\sigma(k-1)}\big)\ \eta_P\big(f_{\sigma(k)},\dots,f_{\sigma(k+l-1)}\big).(ω∧η)P(f):=k!l!1σ∈Sk+l∑sgn(σ) ωP(fσ(0),…,fσ(k−1)) ηP(fσ(k),…,fσ(k+l−1)).
  • Pairing on XXX. For ω∈ΩNk\omega\in\Omega^k_Nω∈ΩNk, η∈ΩNl\eta\in\Omega^l_Nη∈ΩNl:
⟨ω,η⟩X:=∫P∈ptsX(ω∧η)P(frame(TX(P),P,k+l)) dμk+l(P) ∈C,\langle\omega,\eta\rangle_X := \int_{P\in\mathrm{pts}_X} (\omega\wedge\eta)_P\big(\mathrm{frame}(\mathcal{T}_X(P),P,k+l)\big)\ d\mu_{k+l}(P)\ \in\mathbb{C},⟨ω,η⟩X:=∫P∈ptsX(ω∧η)P(frame(TX(P),P,k+l)) dμk+l(P) ∈C,

a Bochner integral over the set ptsX\mathrm{pts}_XptsX (all points of XXX, singular or not) of the complex number obtained by evaluating ω∧η\omega\wedge\etaω∧η at PPP on the chosen JJJ-frame of TX(P)\mathcal{T}_X(P)TX(P) of length k+lk+lk+l. By Mathlib's convention the integral is 000 if the integrand is not integrable (including not almost-everywhere strongly measurable) with respect to μk+l\mu_{k+l}μk+l restricted to ptsX\mathrm{pts}_XptsX.

  • Integral over ZZZ. For η∈ΩNl\eta\in\Omega^l_Nη∈ΩNl:
∫Zη:=∫P∈regZηP(frame(TZ(P),P,l)) dμl(P) ∈C,\int_Z\eta := \int_{P\in\mathrm{reg}_Z}\eta_P\big(\mathrm{frame}(\mathcal{T}_Z(P),P,l)\big)\ d\mu_l(P)\ \in\mathbb{C},∫Zη:=∫P∈regZηP(frame(TZ(P),P,l)) dμl(P) ∈C,

integrating only over the regular points of ZZZ against μl\mu_lμl, using ZZZ's own tangent spaces and frames; same 000-for-non-integrable convention.

The cycle-class property

For c∈H2p(X)c\in H^{2p}(X)c∈H2p(X): IsCycleClassX(Z,n,p,c)\mathrm{IsCycleClass}_X(Z,n,p,c)IsCycleClassX(Z,n,p,c) holds iff

∀ ω∈CX2p with [ω]=c,∀ η∈ΩN2n−2p closed for X:⟨ω,η⟩X=∫Zη.\forall\,\omega\in\mathcal{C}^{2p}_X \text{ with } [\omega]=c,\quad \forall\,\eta\in\Omega^{2n-2p}_N \text{ closed for } X:\qquad \langle\omega,\eta\rangle_X = \int_Z\eta .∀ω∈CX2p with [ω]=c,∀η∈ΩN2n−2p closed for X:⟨ω,η⟩X=∫Zη.

Here 2n−2p2n-2p2n−2p is natural-number subtraction (equal to 2(n−p)2(n-p)2(n−p) because p≤np\le np≤n), the pairing uses frames of length 2p+(2n−2p)=2n2p+(2n-2p)=2n2p+(2n−2p)=2n in TX(P)\mathcal{T}_X(P)TX(P) against μ2n\mu_{2n}μ2n on ptsX\mathrm{pts}_XptsX, and the right-hand side uses frames of length 2(n−p)2(n-p)2(n−p) in TZ(P)\mathcal{T}_Z(P)TZ(P) against μ2(n−p)\mu_{2(n-p)}μ2(n−p) on regZ\mathrm{reg}_ZregZ. The quantifier runs over every closed representative ω\omegaω of ccc (not just one), and over every η\etaη that is closed for XXX (smooth on AmbN\mathrm{Amb}_NAmbN with dηd\etadη vanishing on XXX's tangent spaces); η\etaη is then integrated over ZZZ using ZZZ's tangent data.

Edge cases, degenerate inputs, junk values

  • Nonemptiness forced. Irreducibility of ZZZ includes CZ≠∅C_Z\neq\emptysetCZ=∅; with CZ⊆CXC_Z\subseteq C_XCZ⊆CX this forces CX≠∅C_X\neq\emptysetCX=∅, so the nonsingularity hypothesis on XXX is not vacuous, dim⁡X=(n+1)−˙1=n\dim X = (n+1)\dot{-}1 = ndimX=(n+1)−˙1=n, and regX=ptsX\mathrm{reg}_X = \mathrm{pts}_XregX=ptsX. The hypotheses are jointly satisfiable (e.g. XXX a linear Pn⊆PN\mathbb{P}^n\subseteq\mathbb{P}^NPn⊆PN cut out by linear forms and ZZZ a linear subspace of dimension n−pn-pn−p).
  • Natural subtraction. n−pn-pn−p and 2n−2p2n-2p2n−2p are genuine because p≤np\le np≤n. dim⁡Z=m−˙1\dim Z = m\dot{-}1dimZ=m−˙1 with mmm the minimum tangent rank on CZC_ZCZ; the hypothesis dim⁡Z=n−p\dim Z = n-pdimZ=n−p reads m−˙1=n−pm\dot{-}1 = n-pm−˙1=n−p, i.e. m=n−p+1m = n-p+1m=n−p+1 when m≥1m\ge1m≥1; if mmm were 000 it would force p=np=np=n and regZ\mathrm{reg}_ZregZ could be empty (then ∫Zη=0\int_Z\eta=0∫Zη=0 for all η\etaη). inf⁡∅=0\inf\emptyset=0inf∅=0 does not arise since CZ≠∅C_Z\ne\emptysetCZ=∅.
  • p=np=np=n. Then η\etaη is a 000-form (a smooth function with dηd\etadη vanishing on XXX's tangents), ∫Zη\int_Z\eta∫Zη is the integral of η\etaη over regZ\mathrm{reg}_ZregZ against counting measure μ0\mu_0μ0 (a finite sum if regZ\mathrm{reg}_ZregZ is finite; 000 if η\etaη is not integrable for counting measure on regZ\mathrm{reg}_ZregZ), and (ω∧η)P(f)=ωP(f) η(P)(\omega\wedge\eta)_P(f)=\omega_P(f)\,\eta(P)(ω∧η)P(f)=ωP(f)η(P).
  • p=0p=0p=0. ccc is a class of 000-forms modulo EX0\mathcal{E}^0_XEX0 (smooth functions vanishing on ptsX\mathrm{pts}_XptsX); ω\omegaω is a smooth function whose derivative vanishes on TX(P)\mathcal{T}_X(P)TX(P) at points of XXX; frames of length 2n2n2n are used on both sides (dim⁡Z=n\dim Z=ndimZ=n).
  • N=0N=0N=0. Amb0=C\mathrm{Amb}_0=\mathbb{C}Amb0=C, π(v)=1\pi(v)=1π(v)=1 for v≠0v\neq0v=0, so ptsX⊆{1}\mathrm{pts}_X\subseteq\{1\}ptsX⊆{1}; only n=p=0n=p=0n=p=0 is compatible with tangent rank 111.
  • Frame junk. If for some PPP no JJJ-frame of the required length exists in TX(P)\mathcal{T}_X(P)TX(P) (or TZ(P)\mathcal{T}_Z(P)TZ(P)), the ε\varepsilonε-operator returns an arbitrary family with no orthonormality or membership properties, and the integrand at PPP is whatever the form gives on that family. Even when frames exist, the choice P↦frame(⋅,P,⋅)P\mapsto\mathrm{frame}(\cdot,P,\cdot)P↦frame(⋅,P,⋅) is unspecified and need not be measurable; if the resulting integrand fails to be a.e.-strongly measurable or integrable, the Bochner integral is 000 by convention, on either side of the equation independently.
  • Frame ordering/orientation. Evaluation of a top-degree alternating form on the frame depends on the interleaved order (u0,JPu0,u1,JPu1,… )(u_0,J_Pu_0,u_1,J_Pu_1,\dots)(u0,JPu0,u1,JPu1,…) and on which JJJ-frame ε\varepsilonε selects; the definition fixes one such choice per (T,P,d)(T,P,d)(T,P,d) once and for all.
  • Measure normalisation. Both integrals use Hausdorff measure scaled by πm/(m! 4m)\pi^{m}/(m!\,4^{m})πm/(m!4m) with d=2md=2md=2m; the scale on the left is for d=2nd=2nd=2n and on the right for d=2(n−p)d=2(n-p)d=2(n−p).
  • Domain of integration. The pairing integrates over all of ptsX\mathrm{pts}_XptsX; the right-hand side integrates over regZ⊆ptsZ⊆ptsX\mathrm{reg}_Z\subseteq\mathrm{pts}_Z\subseteq\mathrm{pts}_XregZ⊆ptsZ⊆ptsX, the points of ZZZ of minimal tangent rank, using ZZZ's tangent spaces TZ(P)\mathcal{T}_Z(P)TZ(P) (computed from ZZZ's own vanishing set IZI_ZIZ), not XXX's.
  • Forms are ambient. All forms are functions on the entire matrix space AmbN\mathrm{Amb}_NAmbN with real-multilinear alternating values in C\mathbb{C}C; smoothness is required everywhere on AmbN\mathrm{Amb}_NAmbN, while "closed" and "exact" are tested only tangentially along XXX.
  • Cohomology is complex. H2p(X)H^{2p}(X)H2p(X) is a C\mathbb{C}C-vector space (spans over C\mathbb{C}C); the unique ccc is an element of it, and uniqueness is equality modulo EX2p\mathcal{E}^{2p}_XEX2p.
