Let TTT be a theory in a many-sorted signature Σ\SigmaΣ, and let DDD be Morita data over TTT. The data DDD specifies new product, coproduct, subset and quotient sorts with their symbols π1,π2\pi_1,\pi_2π1,π2, ι1,ι2\iota_1,\iota_2ι1,ι2, iii, ϵ\epsilonϵ, together with explicitly defined function and relation symbols. This gives the extended signature Σ+\Sigma^+Σ+ and the Morita extension T+=T∪{defining axioms}T^+ = T \cup \{\text{defining axioms}\}T+=T∪{defining axioms} (D.ext).

Statement. A Σ+\Sigma^+Σ+-structure MMM is a model of T+T^+T+ if and only if all of the following hold:

  1. the Σ\SigmaΣ-reduct M∣ΣM|_\SigmaM∣Σ is a model of TTT;
  2. for each product sort σ=s1×s2\sigma = s_1\times s_2σ=s1×s2: for all a∈Ms1a\in M_{s_1}a∈Ms1, b∈Ms2b \in M_{s_2}b∈Ms2 there is a unique z∈Mσz\in M_\sigmaz∈Mσ with π1(z)=a\pi_1(z)=aπ1(z)=a and π2(z)=b\pi_2(z)=bπ2(z)=b;
  3. for each coproduct sort σ=s1+s2\sigma = s_1 + s_2σ=s1+s2: every c∈Mσc \in M_\sigmac∈Mσ is ι1(a)\iota_1(a)ι1(a) for a unique aaa or ι2(b)\iota_2(b)ι2(b) for a unique bbb, and ι1(a)≠ι2(b)\iota_1(a) \neq \iota_2(b)ι1(a)=ι2(b) for all a,ba, ba,b;
  4. for each subset sort σ={x:s∣φ(x)}\sigma = \{x : s \mid \varphi(x)\}σ={x:s∣φ(x)}: M∣Σ⊨φ[a]  ⟺  ∃z∈Mσ, i(z)=aM|_\Sigma \models \varphi[a] \iff \exists z\in M_\sigma,\ i(z)=aM∣Σ⊨φ[a]⟺∃z∈Mσ, i(z)=a, for all a∈Msa \in M_sa∈Ms, and iii is injective;
  5. for each quotient sort σ=s/φ\sigma = s/\varphiσ=s/φ: ϵ(a)=ϵ(b)  ⟺  M∣Σ⊨φ[a,b]\epsilon(a)=\epsilon(b) \iff M|_\Sigma\models\varphi[a,b]ϵ(a)=ϵ(b)⟺M∣Σ⊨φ[a,b], and ϵ\epsilonϵ is surjective;
  6. each new function symbol fff with definition ψ(y,xˉ)\psi(y,\bar x)ψ(y,xˉ) satisfies fM(xˉ)=y  ⟺  M∣Σ⊨ψ[y,xˉ]f^M(\bar x)=y \iff M|_\Sigma\models\psi[y,\bar x]fM(xˉ)=y⟺M∣Σ⊨ψ[y,xˉ];
  7. each new relation symbol rrr with definition ψ(xˉ)\psi(\bar x)ψ(xˉ) satisfies rM(xˉ)  ⟺  M∣Σ⊨ψ[xˉ]r^M(\bar x)\iff M|_\Sigma\models\psi[\bar x]rM(xˉ)⟺M∣Σ⊨ψ[xˉ].

This is the semantic reading of the definition of a Morita extension. It turns "M⊨T+M \models T^+M⊨T+" into concrete conditions on the interpretations of the new sorts and symbols, which makes it the basic tool for checking that a proposed structure is a model of a Morita extension, for example in the worked examples of Barrett–Halvorson.

Formalization Note Conditions 2–7 are stated literally as the realization of each defining axiom: unary symbol applications appear as funMap on a one-element tuple, and the variable assignments are indexed by Fin n.

/-- Semantic characterization of the models of a Morita extension. A `D.sig`-structure `M` is a
model of `T⁺ = D.ext` iff its reduct to `L` is a model of `T` and `M` satisfies, read off literally,
each defining axiom: `π₁, π₂` make each product sort a product; `ι₁, ι₂` are jointly surjective,
individually injective (uniqueness of the preimage) with disjoint images on each coproduct sort; each
inclusion `i` is injective with image `{a | φ(a)}`; each quotient map `ε` is surjective with kernel
`φ(a, b)`; and each new function or relation symbol is interpreted by its defining formula. -/
