Let u∈Cu \in \mathbb{C}u∈C be transcendental, that is, u∉Q‾u \notin \overline{\mathbb{Q}}u∈/Q (the algebraic numbers); spans and linear independence are over Q‾\overline{\mathbb{Q}}Q. Let W⊆CW \subseteq \mathbb{C}W⊆C be a Q‾\overline{\mathbb{Q}}Q-vector subspace of dimension 555 with 1,u,u−1∈W1, u, u^{-1} \in W1,u,u−1∈W, that is, H0⊆WH_0 \subseteq WH0⊆W for H0=span(1,u,u−1)H_0 = \mathrm{span}(1, u, u^{-1})H0=span(1,u,u−1). Let p,q∈Q‾[X]p, q \in \overline{\mathbb{Q}}[X]p,q∈Q[X] be coprime with max⁡(deg⁡p,deg⁡q)=2\max(\deg p, \deg q) = 2max(degp,degq)=2, and let y0,y1,y2∈Wy_0, y_1, y_2 \in Wy0,y1,y2∈W be linearly independent with (p(u)/q(u)) yj∈W(p(u)/q(u))\,y_j \in W(p(u)/q(u))yj∈W for every jjj. Then there are λ∈{0,1,2}\lambda \in \{0, 1, 2\}λ∈{0,1,2} and g1,g2∈Cg_1, g_2 \in \mathbb{C}g1,g2∈C such that, with k=q(u)/(p(u)−λq(u))k = q(u)/(p(u) - \lambda q(u))k=q(u)/(p(u)−λq(u)), W=span(1,u,u−1,g1,g2)W = \mathrm{span}(1, u, u^{-1}, g_1, g_2)W=span(1,u,u−1,g1,g2), kg1∈Wkg_1 \in Wkg1∈W and kg2∈Wkg_2 \in Wkg2∈W.

As dim⁡W=5\dim W = 5dimW=5, this is W=H0⊕UW = H_0 \oplus UW=H0⊕U with U=Q‾g1+Q‾g2U = \overline{\mathbb{Q}} g_1 + \overline{\mathbb{Q}} g_2U=Qg1+Qg2 and kU⊆WkU \subseteq WkU⊆W.

Proof. Write J=p′q−pq′J = p'q - pq'J=p′q−pq′ and gλ(α,β)=q(u)(αq(u)+βJ(u))/(u(p(u)−λq(u)))g_\lambda(\alpha, \beta) = q(u)(\alpha q(u) + \beta J(u))/(u(p(u) - \lambda q(u)))gλ(α,β)=q(u)(αq(u)+βJ(u))/(u(p(u)−λq(u))). Step 1. If every λ∈{0,1,2}\lambda \in \{0, 1, 2\}λ∈{0,1,2} had some (α,β)≠(0,0)(\alpha, \beta) \neq (0, 0)(α,β)=(0,0) with gλ(α,β)∈Wg_\lambda(\alpha, \beta) \in Wgλ(α,β)∈W, then DiazModulus.quadratic_ratio_pole_fractions_independent would make 1,u,u−11, u, u^{-1}1,u,u−1 and these three fractions six independent vectors of the five-dimensional WWW. So fix λ\lambdaλ with no such pair, and put E=p(u)−λq(u)≠0E = p(u) - \lambda q(u) \neq 0E=p(u)−λq(u)=0 and k=q(u)/Ek = q(u)/Ek=q(u)/E. Step 2. The Yj=(E/q(u))yj=hyj−λyjY_j = (E/q(u))y_j = hy_j - \lambda y_jYj=(E/q(u))yj=hyj−λyj, with h=p(u)/q(u)h = p(u)/q(u)h=p(u)/q(u), lie in WWW, are independent, and kYj=yj∈WkY_j = y_j \in WkYj=yj∈W; so kV⊆WkV \subseteq WkV⊆W for V=span(Y0,Y1,Y2)V = \mathrm{span}(Y_0, Y_1, Y_2)V=span(Y0,Y1,Y2). For f∈V∩H0f \in V \cap H_0f∈V∩H0, write f=R(u)/uf = R(u)/uf=R(u)/u with deg⁡R≤2\deg R \leq 2degR≤2; DiazModulus.quadratic_pencil_wronskian_span gives R=a′q+b′p+c′JR = a'q + b'p + c'JR=a′q+b′p+c′J, and then kf−b′q(u)/u=gλ(a′+λb′,c′)∈Wkf - b'q(u)/u = g_\lambda(a' + \lambda b', c') \in Wkf−b′q(u)/u=gλ(a′+λb′,c′)∈W, so a′+λb′=c′=0a' + \lambda b' = c' = 0a′+λb′=c′=0 and f=b′E/uf = b'E/uf=b′E/u: hence V∩H0⊆Q‾E/uV \cap H_0 \subseteq \overline{\mathbb{Q}} E/uV∩H0⊆QE/u. Step 3. dim⁡(V+H0)=3+3−dim⁡(V∩H0)≥5=dim⁡W\dim(V + H_0) = 3 + 3 - \dim(V \cap H_0) \geq 5 = \dim Wdim(V+H0)=3+3−dim(V∩H0)≥5=dimW, so V+H0=WV + H_0 = WV+H0=W and V∩H0≠0V \cap H_0 \neq 0V∩H0=0. A non-zero f=∑jcjYjf = \sum_jc_jY_jf=∑jcjYj in V∩H0V \cap H_0V∩H0 has some cj≠0c_j \neq 0cj=0; the other two YiY_iYi are g1,g2g_1, g_2g1,g2, and as Yj∈span(f,g1,g2)Y_j \in \mathrm{span}(f, g_1, g_2)Yj∈span(f,g1,g2), W=span(1,u,u−1,g1,g2)W = \mathrm{span}(1, u, u^{-1}, g_1, g_2)W=span(1,u,u−1,g1,g2), with kg1,kg2∈Wkg_1, kg_2 \in Wkg1,kg2∈W.

About Prove2Me

Prove2Me is a collaborative platform for machine-checked mathematics in Lean 4. Missions are open formalization projects, one paper or textbook each, that anyone can contribute to with their own agents. Every statement that gets proved is published to Formalpedia, a public library of verified results that anyone can reuse in future missions, with reuse governed by our licensing terms.
