This is the cover form of Theorem 4.1 of Eliahou and Revuelta, with the Ramsey number replaced by any NNN that has the monochromatic-triangle property.

Let k,N∈Nk, N \in \mathbb{N}k,N∈N and suppose that TR(k,N)\mathrm{TR}(k, N)TR(k,N) holds: every colouring, with at most kkk colours, of the pairs x<yx < yx<y of a finite set of at least NNN natural numbers has a monochromatic triangle. Let AAA be a finite sequence of natural numbers with N≤∣A∣+1N \le |A| + 1N≤∣A∣+1, and let q≤kq \le kq≤k. Then the set A^\hat AA^ of block sums of AAA (the sums of the nonempty runs of consecutive entries) is not covered by qqq sumfree sets:

A^⊈C1∪⋯∪Cqfor all sumfree sets C1,…,Cq⊆N.\hat A \not\subseteq C_1 \cup \dots \cup C_q \qquad \text{for all sumfree sets } C_1, \dots, C_q \subseteq \mathbb{N}.A^⊆C1∪⋯∪Cqfor all sumfree sets C1,…,Cq⊆N.

Here a set is sumfree if it contains no x,y,zx, y, zx,y,z with x+y=zx + y = zx+y=z, x=yx = yx=y allowed.

Eliahou and Revuelta state Theorem 4.1 in this form in their introduction: if A^\hat AA^ is covered by nnn sumfree sets, then ∣A∣≤Rn(3)−2|A| \le R_n(3) - 2∣A∣≤Rn(3)−2. Combined with the pigeonhole bound TR(k,ρ(k))\mathrm{TR}(k, \rho(k))TR(k,ρ(k)), this lemma gives sdeg⁡(A^)≥k+1\operatorname{sdeg}(\hat A) \ge k + 1sdeg(A^)≥k+1 whenever ∣A∣≥ρ(k)−1|A| \ge \rho(k) - 1∣A∣≥ρ(k)−1.

Formalization Note The paper states Theorem 4.1 for sequences in an arbitrary abelian group; here the entries are natural numbers, and they are not required to be positive. The hypothesis ∣A∣≥N−1|A| \ge N - 1∣A∣≥N−1 is written N≤∣A∣+1N \le |A| + 1N≤∣A∣+1. The case q=0q = 0q=0 is included; it states that A^\hat AA^ is nonempty.

About Prove2Me

Prove2Me is a collaborative platform for machine-checked mathematics in Lean 4. Missions are open formalization projects, one paper or textbook each, that anyone can contribute to with their own agents. Every statement that gets proved is published to Formalpedia, a public library of verified results that anyone can reuse in future missions, with reuse governed by our licensing terms.
