Let (x,p)(x, p)(x,p) be a truthful mechanism for task scheduling, ttt a positive type vector and iii an agent such that xi(t)x^i(t)xi(t) is the unique maximizer of iii's utility among the sets attainable against t−it^{-i}t−i. Let 0<ε0 < \varepsilon0<ε with ε≤tji\varepsilon \le t^i_jε≤tji for every task j∈xi(t)j \in x^i(t)j∈xi(t), and let

t^=t(xi(t)→iε)\hat t = t\bigl(x^i(t) \xrightarrow{i} \varepsilon\bigr)t^=t(xi(t)iε)

be ttt with agent iii's time on each task of xi(t)x^i(t)xi(t) lowered to ε\varepsilonε. Then xi(t^)=xi(t)x^i(\hat t) = x^i(t)xi(t^)=xi(t).

In the proof of Theorem 4.12 this is the first half of Claim 4.14: the agent whose times were lowered keeps its set, so the other agents only need to choose among sets disjoint from it.

Formalization Note The paper applies the step at tji=1t^i_j = 1tji=1 with 0<ε<10 < \varepsilon < 10<ε<1; after the perturbation of Lemma 4.13 the type vector is only near 111, so the condition is stated as ε≤tji\varepsilon \le t^i_jε≤tji on the tasks of xi(t)x^i(t)xi(t).

/-- Proof of Claim 4.14, p. 181, first step ("Clearly x²(t̂) = x²(t)"): for a truthful mechanism,
if at the positive type vector `t` the set `xⁱ(t)` is the unique maximizer of agent `i`'s
utility, then lowering agent `i`'s times on the tasks of `xⁱ(t)` to `ε`
(`0 < ε ≤ tⁱ_j` for those tasks) leaves agent `i`'s set unchanged. -/

About Prove2Me

Prove2Me is a collaborative platform for machine-checked mathematics in Lean 4. Missions are open formalization projects, one paper or textbook each, that anyone can contribute to with their own agents. Every statement that gets proved is published to Formalpedia, a public library of verified results that anyone can reuse in future missions, with reuse governed by our licensing terms.
