Theorem. Let ∣U∣=8=23|U|=8=2^3∣U∣=8=23. There are two maps g0,g1:P(U)→Ug_0,g_1:\mathcal P(U)\to Ug0,g1:P(U)→U such that for every 333-set Y⊆UY\subseteq UY⊆U and every u∈Uu\in Uu∈U, some gig_igi takes the value uuu on a subset of YYY.

So the two-map common-hole statement ('for ∣U∣=2k|U|=2^k∣U∣=2k, any two maps miss a common point on some kkk-set'), which would give one unit of gain over the counting bound for Erdős Problem 624, is false at k=3k=3k=3; e.g. gi(A)=(i,min⁡(∣A∣,3))g_i(A)=(i,\min(|A|,3))gi(A)=(i,min(∣A∣,3)) on U={0,1}×{0,1,2,3}U=\{0,1\}\times\{0,1,2,3\}U={0,1}×{0,1,2,3}. Each map misses half of UUU on every 3-set, yet the missed sets are disjoint. The statement for large kkk remains open.

Formalization Note. U=Fin (23)U=\mathrm{Fin}\,(2^3)U=Fin(23), maps indexed by Fin 2\mathrm{Fin}\,2Fin2; special case r=2,n=8,k=3r=2,n=8,k=3r=2,n=8,k=3 of rank_cover.

About Prove2Me

Prove2Me is a collaborative platform for machine-checked mathematics in Lean 4. Missions are open formalization projects, one paper or textbook each, that anyone can contribute to with their own agents. Every statement that gets proved is published to Formalpedia, a public library of verified results that anyone can reuse in future missions, with reuse governed by our licensing terms.
