Let G=(V,E)G = (V,E)G=(V,E) be a finite graph with no isolated nodes. The paper states this lemma for "any convex body KKK containing STAB(G)\mathrm{STAB}(G)STAB(G) and contained in FRAC(G)\mathrm{FRAC}(G)FRAC(G)" (p. 177); it is stated here for the homogenized body. Let K⊆RV∪{0}K \subseteq \mathbb R^{V\cup\{0\}}K⊆RV∪{0} be a closed convex cone with K⊆FR(G)K \subseteq \mathrm{FR}(G)K⊆FR(G), and say that an inequality aTx≤ba^{\mathsf T}x \le baTx≤b on RV\mathbb R^VRV is valid for KKK if it holds for every x∈RVx \in \mathbb R^Vx∈RV with (1x)∈K\binom1x \in K(x1)∈K, and valid for N(K)N(K)N(K) if it holds for every xxx with (1x)∈N(K)\binom1x \in N(K)(x1)∈N(K).

If aTx≤ba^{\mathsf T}x \le baTx≤b is an inequality such that for some v∈Vv \in Vv∈V both the deletion and the contraction of vvv give an inequality valid for KKK, then aTx≤ba^{\mathsf T}x \le baTx≤b is valid for N(K)N(K)N(K):

aV−vTx≤b  and  aV−Γ(v)−vTx≤b−av valid for K ⟹ aTx≤b valid for N(K).a_{V-v}^{\mathsf T}x \le b \ \text{ and } \ a_{V-\Gamma(v)-v}^{\mathsf T}x \le b - a_v \text{ valid for } K \ \Longrightarrow\ a^{\mathsf T}x \le b \text{ valid for } N(K).aV−vTx≤b  and  aV−Γ(v)−vTx≤b−av valid for K ⟹ aTx≤b valid for N(K).

Applied to K=Nt(FR(G))K = N^{t}(\mathrm{FR}(G))K=Nt(FR(G)), it passes validity from Nt(G)N^t(G)Nt(G) to Nt+1(G)N^{t+1}(G)Nt+1(G); this is how the induction in Theorem 2.13 climbs one level at a time.

Formalization Note The body KKK is taken in homogenized (cone) form so that it applies to Nt(FR(G))N^{t}(\mathrm{FR}(G))Nt(FR(G)). The hypothesis "containing STAB(G)\mathrm{STAB}(G)STAB(G)" is dropped (the lemma is stronger without it). KKK is assumed closed: the paper tacitly takes KKK closed (polyhedral in all its applications), and Lemma 1.3, from which this lemma follows, needs it. Deletion and contraction are the zero-extended coefficient vectors on the same graph. aaa is an arbitrary real vector.

What the Lean code literally says, in plain math · claude-opus-5-5

Setting. VVV is a finite type with decidable equality and GGG is a simple graph on VVV with decidable adjacency. K⊆R{0}∪VK \subseteq \mathbb{R}^{\{0\}\cup V}K⊆R{0}∪V, a∈RVa \in \mathbb{R}^Va∈RV, b∈Rb \in \mathbb{R}b∈R and v∈Vv \in Vv∈V. For a set L⊆R{0}∪VL \subseteq \mathbb{R}^{\{0\}\cup V}L⊆R{0}∪V, write its slice as

L∣x0=1={ x∈RV:(1,x)∈L }.L|_{x_0=1} = \{\, x \in \mathbb{R}^V : (1, x) \in L \,\}.L∣x0=1={x∈RV:(1,x)∈L}.

Hypotheses.

  1. GGG has no isolated vertices.
  2. KKK is a convex cone: nonempty, closed under addition, and closed under nonnegative scaling.
  3. KKK is topologically closed.
  4. K⊆FR(G)={x:xj≥0 (j∈V), xj+xk≤x0 for j∼k}K \subseteq \mathrm{FR}(G) = \{x : x_j \ge 0\ (j \in V),\ x_j + x_k \le x_0 \text{ for } j \sim k\}K⊆FR(G)={x:xj≥0 (j∈V), xj+xk≤x0 for j∼k}.
  5. Deletion. For every x∈K∣x0=1x \in K|_{x_0=1}x∈K∣x0=1:
∑w≠vawxw≤b.\sum_{w \ne v} a_w x_w \le b.w=v∑awxw≤b.
  1. Contraction. For every x∈K∣x0=1x \in K|_{x_0=1}x∈K∣x0=1:
∑w≠v, w≁vawxw≤b−av.\sum_{w \ne v,\ w \not\sim v} a_w x_w \le b - a_v.w=v, w∼v∑awxw≤b−av.

No sign conditions are imposed on aaa or bbb.

Conclusion. a⊤x≤ba^\top x \le ba⊤x≤b holds for every x∈N(K)∣x0=1x \in N(K)|_{x_0=1}x∈N(K)∣x0=1. Here N(K)=N(K,Q)N(K) = N(K, Q)N(K)=N(K,Q) is defined as follows:

  • N(K,Q)N(K, Q)N(K,Q) is the set of 000th columns Ye0Y e_0Ye0 of matrices YYY indexed by {0}∪V\{0\}\cup V{0}∪V that are symmetric, have Yjj=Y0jY_{jj} = Y_{0j}Yjj=Y0j for j∈Vj \in Vj∈V, and satisfy u⊤Yw≥0u^\top Y w \ge 0u⊤Yw≥0 for all u∈K∗u \in K^*u∈K∗ and w∈Q∗w \in Q^*w∈Q∗;
  • K∗={u:u⊤x≥0 ∀x∈K}K^* = \{u : u^\top x \ge 0\ \forall x \in K\}K∗={u:u⊤x≥0 ∀x∈K};
  • QQQ is the cone spanned by the 0–1 vectors with x0=1x_0 = 1x0=1.

Degenerate cases.

  • A vertex vvv must exist, so VVV is nonempty. With hypothesis 1, GGG then has an edge.
  • If KKK has no point with x0=1x_0 = 1x0=1 (for example K={0}K = \{0\}K={0}), hypotheses 5 and 6 are vacuous. The statement then asserts a⊤x≤ba^\top x \le ba⊤x≤b on N(K)∣x0=1N(K)|_{x_0=1}N(K)∣x0=1 with no further assumption on aaa or bbb.
