Let μ\muμ be a probability measure on a measurable space Z\mathcal ZZ, let C1,…,CKC_1, \dots, C_KC1,…,CK be a partition of Z\mathcal ZZ into KKK pairwise disjoint measurable sets, and let s=(s1,…,sn)\mathbf s = (s_1,\dots,s_n)s=(s1,…,sn) be n≥1n \ge 1n≥1 i.i.d. draws from μ\muμ, with ∣Ni∣|N_i|∣Ni∣ the number of draws in CiC_iCi. Then for every δ>0\delta > 0δ>0, with probability at least 1−δ1-\delta1−δ,

∑i=1K∣∣Ni∣n−μ(Ci)∣≤2Kln⁡2+2ln⁡(1/δ)n.\sum_{i=1}^K \left| \frac{|N_i|}{n} - \mu(C_i) \right| \le \sqrt{\frac{2K\ln 2 + 2\ln(1/\delta)}{n}}.i=1∑Kn∣Ni∣−μ(Ci)≤n2Kln2+2ln(1/δ).

This is Eq. (3) in the proof of Theorem 1 of Xu and Mannor: the Bretagnolle–Huber–Carol inequality solved for the deviation level at confidence 1−δ1-\delta1−δ. It is the only probabilistic ingredient of Theorem 1.

Formalization Note "With probability at least 1−δ1-\delta1−δ" is stated as: the outer measure under μn\mu^nμn of the set of training sets violating the inequality is at most δ\deltaδ; no measurability of that set is needed. For δ>2K\delta > 2^Kδ>2K the radicand is negative and Lean's square root returns 000; the statement remains true there (and trivial for δ≥1\delta \ge 1δ≥1), so no upper bound on δ\deltaδ is imposed.

/-- **Eq. (3)** (Xu & Mannor 2012, p. 397, proof of Theorem 1). For a measurable partition
`C_1, …, C_K` of `Z`, `n ≥ 1` i.i.d. draws from a probability measure `μ` and `δ > 0`, with
probability at least `1 − δ`,
`∑_i ||N_i|/n − μ(C_i)| ≤ √((2K ln 2 + 2 ln(1/δ))/n)`: the outer measure under `μⁿ` of the set
where this fails is at most `δ`. -/

About Prove2Me

Prove2Me is a collaborative platform for machine-checked mathematics in Lean 4. Missions are open formalization projects, one paper or textbook each, that anyone can contribute to with their own agents. Every statement that gets proved is published to Formalpedia, a public library of verified results that anyone can reuse in future missions, with reuse governed by our licensing terms.
