Let m≥2m\ge 2m≥2 be an integer and let α∈C\alpha\in\mathbb{C}α∈C with α≠αˉ\alpha\ne\bar\alphaα=αˉ (no condition on ∣α∣|\alpha|∣α∣). Consider the four complex polynomials in two variables

  • Pα(X,Y)=Xm(α+XY)+Ym(αˉ+XY)P_\alpha(X,Y)=X^m(\alpha+XY)+Y^m(\bar\alpha+XY)Pα(X,Y)=Xm(α+XY)+Ym(αˉ+XY),
  • Qα(u,v)=um+vm+uv(αˉum+αvm)Q_\alpha(u,v)=u^m+v^m+uv(\bar\alpha u^m+\alpha v^m)Qα(u,v)=um+vm+uv(αˉum+αvm),
  • Mα(u,Y)=αu+Y+αˉum+1Ym+umYm+1M_\alpha(u,Y)=\alpha u+Y+\bar\alpha u^{m+1}Y^m+u^mY^{m+1}Mα(u,Y)=αu+Y+αˉum+1Ym+umYm+1,
  • Mα′(v,X)=αˉv+X+αvm+1Xm+vmXm+1M'_\alpha(v,X)=\bar\alpha v+X+\alpha v^{m+1}X^m+v^mX^{m+1}Mα′(v,X)=αˉv+X+αvm+1Xm+vmXm+1,

which are the equations of the curve Vα⊂P1×P1V_\alpha\subset\mathbb{P}^1\times\mathbb{P}^1Vα⊂P1×P1 in the four standard charts, with u=1/Xu=1/Xu=1/X and v=1/Yv=1/Yv=1/Y. A polynomial F(s,t)F(s,t)F(s,t) has multiplicity nnn at (s0,t0)∈C2(s_0,t_0)\in\mathbb{C}^2(s0,t0)∈C2 if F∈mn∖mn+1F\in\mathfrak{m}^n\setminus\mathfrak{m}^{n+1}F∈mn∖mn+1, where m=(s−s0, t−t0)\mathfrak{m}=(s-s_0,\,t-t_0)m=(s−s0,t−t0). It has an ordinary nnn-fold point at the origin if it has multiplicity nnn at (0,0)(0,0)(0,0) and its homogeneous component FnF_nFn of degree nnn is a product of nnn pairwise non-proportional nonzero linear forms:

Fn(s,t)=c∏i=1n(λis+μit),c≠0,(λi,μi)≠(0,0),λiμj−μiλj≠0  (i≠j).F_n(s,t)=c\prod_{i=1}^{n}(\lambda_i s+\mu_i t),\qquad c\ne0,\quad (\lambda_i,\mu_i)\ne(0,0),\quad \lambda_i\mu_j-\mu_i\lambda_j\ne0\ \ (i\ne j).Fn(s,t)=ci=1∏n(λis+μit),c=0,(λi,μi)=(0,0),λiμj−μiλj=0  (i=j).

Then:

  1. PαP_\alphaPα has an ordinary mmm-fold point at (0,0)(0,0)(0,0);
  2. QαQ_\alphaQα has an ordinary mmm-fold point at (0,0)(0,0)(0,0);
  3. every zero (x,y)≠(0,0)(x,y)\ne(0,0)(x,y)=(0,0) of PαP_\alphaPα in C2\mathbb{C}^2C2 has multiplicity 111;
  4. every zero (u,v)≠(0,0)(u,v)\ne(0,0)(u,v)=(0,0) of QαQ_\alphaQα in C2\mathbb{C}^2C2 has multiplicity 111;
  5. every zero (u,y)∈C2(u,y)\in\mathbb{C}^2(u,y)∈C2 of MαM_\alphaMα has multiplicity 111;
  6. every zero (v,x)∈C2(v,x)\in\mathbb{C}^2(v,x)∈C2 of Mα′M'_\alphaMα′ has multiplicity 111.

Lemma 4 of the note states that the only singular points of VαV_\alphaVα are (0,0)(0,0)(0,0) and (∞,∞)(\infty,\infty)(∞,∞), both ordinary mmm-fold points; this is that clause, expressed through the four chart equations. The note assumes ∣α∣=1|\alpha|=1∣α∣=1, which is not needed here.

Formalization Note: Each chart equation is a polynomial in two variables over C\mathbb{C}C, with the variables in the order written; multiplicities and tangent cones are computed chart by chart at complex points, and invariance under a change of chart is not claimed.

About Prove2Me

Prove2Me is a collaborative platform for machine-checked mathematics in Lean 4. Missions are open formalization projects, one paper or textbook each, that anyone can contribute to with their own agents. Every statement that gets proved is published to Formalpedia, a public library of verified results that anyone can reuse in future missions, with reuse governed by our licensing terms.
