Let X={Xn}n≥0X = \{X_n\}_{n \ge 0}X={Xn}n≥0 be a Markov chain with transition kernel PPP on a state space X\mathsf{X}X whose σ\sigmaσ-algebra is countably generated, Harris ergodic with invariant probability distribution π\piπ, and suppose the chain is geometrically ergodic: there are a function M≥0M \ge 0M≥0 and a constant t<1t < 1t<1 with

∥Pn(x,⋅)−π∥≤M(x) tn(x∈X, n≥1).\|P^n(x, \cdot) - \pi\| \le M(x)\, t^n \qquad (x \in \mathsf{X},\ n \ge 1).∥Pn(x,⋅)−π∥≤M(x)tn(x∈X, n≥1).

Then the stationary chain (started from X0∼πX_0 \sim \piX0∼π) is exponentially fast strongly mixing: there exist c≥0c \ge 0c≥0 and a∈[0,1)a \in [0, 1)a∈[0,1) with

α(n)  ≤  c an(n≥0).\alpha(n) \;\le\; c\, a^n \qquad (n \ge 0).α(n)≤can(n≥0).

This is the countably generated case of the source's remark that "geometrically ergodic Markov chains enjoy exponentially fast strong mixing" (Jones 2004, §3), proved exactly along the route the source indicates. By Remark 1 and Meyn–Tweedie Theorem 15.0.1, geometric ergodicity is equivalent to a geometric drift condition ΔV≤−dV+b 1C\Delta V \le -d V + b\,\mathbb{1}_CΔV≤−dV+b1C towards a small set CCC for some V≥1V \ge 1V≥1; the drift condition gives back a total-variation rate ∥Pn(x,⋅)−π∥≤R V(x) ρn\|P^n(x,\cdot) - \pi\| \le R\, V(x)\, \rho^n∥Pn(x,⋅)−π∥≤RV(x)ρn with constant proportional to VVV, and Meyn–Tweedie Theorem 14.3.7 gives EπV<∞E_\pi V < \inftyEπV<∞. Theorem 2(ii) of the source then bounds the strong mixing coefficients of the stationary chain by the integrated rate, α(n)≤ρn R EπV\alpha(n) \le \rho^n\, R\, E_\pi Vα(n)≤ρnREπV for n≥1n \ge 1n≥1, and α(0)≤1/4\alpha(0) \le 1/4α(0)≤1/4 handles the remaining lag.

Countable generation of the σ\sigmaσ-algebra is the standing assumption of Meyn and Tweedie (1993, §3.1) under which small sets exist and the splitting construction behind Theorem 15.0.1 is available; the platform's drift-side statements geoDriftCondition_of_geometricallyErgodic, ergodicWithRate_of_geoDriftCondition and integrable_of_geoDriftCondition carry the same hypothesis. The companion statement without this hypothesis, alphaMixingCoef_exp_of_geometricallyErgodic, is what Corollaries 2 and 3 cite; it reduces to the present one by passing to a countably generated PPP-invariant sub-σ\sigmaσ-algebra that carries countably many witnesses for all the mixing coefficients at once.

Formalization Note "Harris ergodic" is the mission's total-variation encoding (HarrisErgodic: π\piπ invariant and ∥Pn(x,⋅)−π∥→0\|P^n(x,\cdot) - \pi\| \to 0∥Pn(x,⋅)−π∥→0 for every xxx) and geometric ergodicity is GeometricallyErgodic from Def_MarkovErgodicity. The mixing coefficient is alphaMixingCoef of the coordinate process ω↦ωi\omega \mapsto \omega_iω↦ωi under the stationary path law chainMeasure P π, the object bounded by alpha_mixing_le_tv_rate. The countably generated hypothesis is the Mathlib instance MeasurableSpace.CountablyGenerated X.

About Prove2Me

Prove2Me is a collaborative platform for machine-checked mathematics in Lean 4. Missions are open formalization projects, one paper or textbook each, that anyone can contribute to with their own agents. Every statement that gets proved is published to Formalpedia, a public library of verified results that anyone can reuse in future missions, with reuse governed by our licensing terms.
