Let u∈Cu \in \mathbb{C}u∈C be transcendental, that is, u∉Q‾u \notin \overline{\mathbb{Q}}u∈/Q (the algebraic numbers); spans and linear independence are over Q‾\overline{\mathbb{Q}}Q. Let s∈Q‾s \in \overline{\mathbb{Q}}s∈Q be real (sˉ=s\bar s = ssˉ=s) with s2=uuˉs^2 = u\bar us2=uuˉ. Let W⊆CW \subseteq \mathbb{C}W⊆C be a Q‾\overline{\mathbb{Q}}Q-vector subspace of dimension 555 with 1,u,u−1∈W1, u, u^{-1} \in W1,u,u−1∈W, that is, H0⊆WH_0 \subseteq WH0⊆W for H0=span(1,u,u−1)H_0 = \mathrm{span}(1, u, u^{-1})H0=span(1,u,u−1). Suppose WWW is stable under complex conjugation (wˉ∈W\bar w \in Wwˉ∈W for every w∈Ww \in Ww∈W) and satisfies (D1): there are linearly independent t0,t1,t2t_0, t_1, t_2t0,t1,t2 with tj∈Wt_j \in Wtj∈W and utj∈Wut_j \in Wutj∈W. Then one of the following holds:

  • u2∈Wu^2 \in Wu2∈W, or uˉ2∈W\bar u^2 \in Wuˉ2∈W, or (u−a)−1∈W(u - a)^{-1} \in W(u−a)−1∈W for some a∈Q‾a \in \overline{\mathbb{Q}}a∈Q with a≠0a \neq 0a=0 (WWW is visible);
  • there are λ,f∈C\lambda, f \in \mathbb{C}λ,f∈C with λ∈Q‾\lambda \in \overline{\mathbb{Q}}λ∈Q, λλˉ=1\lambda\bar\lambda = 1λλˉ=1, fˉ=f\bar f = ffˉ=f and W=span(1,u,uˉ,f,f/(s+λu))W = \mathrm{span}(1, u, \bar u, f, f/(s + \lambda u))W=span(1,u,uˉ,f,f/(s+λu)), the real pencil space W(λ,f)W(\lambda, f)W(λ,f).

Proof. As s2=uuˉ≠0s^2 = u\bar u \neq 0s2=uuˉ=0, uˉ=s2u−1\bar u = s^2u^{-1}uˉ=s2u−1, so u−2∈Wu^{-2} \in Wu−2∈W if and only if uˉ2∈W\bar u^2 \in Wuˉ2∈W. If WWW is visible we are done. Otherwise DiazModulus.degree_one_multiplier_space_visible_or_degree_one_space gives ggg with 1,u,u−1,g,ug1, u, u^{-1}, g, ug1,u,u−1,g,ug independent and spanning WWW. Then Z={h∈W:uh∈W}Z = \{h \in W : uh \in W\}Z={h∈W:uh∈W} is span(1,u−1,g)\mathrm{span}(1, u^{-1}, g)span(1,u−1,g): for h=a0+a1u+a2u−1+a3g+a4ugh = a_0 + a_1u + a_2u^{-1} + a_3g + a_4ugh=a0+a1u+a2u−1+a3g+a4ug in ZZZ, a1u2+a4u2g∈Wa_1u^2 + a_4u^2g \in Wa1u2+a4u2g∈W; a4=0a_4 = 0a4=0 forces a1=0a_1 = 0a1=0 (u2∉Wu^2 \notin Wu2∈/W); if a4≠0a_4 \neq 0a4=0, write u2(g+b)=b0+b1u+b2u−1+b3g+b4ugu^2(g + b) = b_0 + b_1u + b_2u^{-1} + b_3g + b_4ugu2(g+b)=b0+b1u+b2u−1+b3g+b4ug and take a root c∈Q‾c \in \overline{\mathbb{Q}}c∈Q of X2−b4X−b3X^2 - b_4X - b_3X2−b4X−b3 (a square root of the discriminant is algebraic); then F=(c−b4)g+ug+bu∈W∖H0F = (c - b_4)g + ug + bu \in W \setminus H_0F=(c−b4)g+ug+bu∈W∖H0 has (u−c)F∈H0(u - c)F \in H_0(u−c)F∈H0, which puts u−2u^{-2}u−2 or (u−c)−1(u - c)^{-1}(u−c)−1 in WWW, a contradiction. Now h=u−1gˉ=s−2 ug‾h = u^{-1}\bar g = s^{-2}\,\overline{ug}h=u−1gˉ=s−2ug lies in WWW, and so does uh=gˉuh = \bar guh=gˉ; so h∈Zh \in Zh∈Z and gˉ∈uZ=span(1,u,ug)\bar g \in uZ = \mathrm{span}(1, u, ug)gˉ∈uZ=span(1,u,ug). Finally 1,u,uˉ,g,ug1, u, \bar u, g, ug1,u,uˉ,g,ug are independent, their span is WWW by dimension, and DiazModulus.conj_equivariant_degree_one_space_eq_real_pencil_space (10.43), whose hypothesis is gˉ∈span(1,u,ug)\bar g \in \mathrm{span}(1, u, ug)gˉ∈span(1,u,ug), gives λ\lambdaλ and fff.

Novelty. The conjugation-stable refinement of the degree-one case, as in the project's research notes; routine; uses DiazModulus.conj_equivariant_degree_one_space_eq_real_pencil_space (10.43).

About Prove2Me

Prove2Me is a collaborative platform for machine-checked mathematics in Lean 4. Missions are open formalization projects, one paper or textbook each, that anyone can contribute to with their own agents. Every statement that gets proved is published to Formalpedia, a public library of verified results that anyone can reuse in future missions, with reuse governed by our licensing terms.
