Let DDD be a set of valuations on bundles of M={1,…,m}M=\{1,\dots,m\}M={1,…,m}, let RRR be a set of allocations to nnn bidders, and let fff be an allocation rule mapping report profiles to allocations. Suppose fff is maximal in range with range RRR on DDD: for every report profile b=(b1,…,bn)b=(b_1,\dots,b_n)b=(b1,…,bn) with each bk∈Db_k\in Dbk∈D, the allocation f(b)f(b)f(b) lies in RRR and

∑ibi(ai)  ≤  ∑ibi(f(b)i)for all a∈R.\sum_{i} b_i\big(a_i\big)\;\le\;\sum_i b_i\big(f(b)_i\big)\qquad\text{for all } a\in R.i∑bi(ai)≤i∑bi(f(b)i)for all a∈R.

Pay every bidder iii the sum ∑k≠ibk(f(b)k)\sum_{k\ne i} b_k(f(b)_k)∑k=ibk(f(b)k) of the other bidders' reported values (the VCG payment scheme). Then the mechanism is incentive compatible on DDD: for every profile vvv with each vk∈Dv_k\in Dvk∈D, every bidder iii and every vi′∈Dv_i'\in Dvi′∈D,

vi(f(vi′,v−i)i)+∑k≠ivk(f(vi′,v−i)k)  ≤  vi(f(v)i)+∑k≠ivk(f(v)k).v_i\big(f(v_i',v_{-i})_i\big)+\sum_{k\ne i} v_k\big(f(v_i',v_{-i})_k\big)\;\le\;v_i\big(f(v)_i\big)+\sum_{k\ne i} v_k\big(f(v)_k\big).vi(f(vi′,v−i)i)+k=i∑vk(f(vi′,v−i)k)≤vi(f(v)i)+k=i∑vk(f(v)k).

This is the observation of §5.1 that makes every maximal-in-range algorithm truthful: a bidder's utility equals the true welfare of the chosen allocation, which truthful reporting maximizes over the range.

Formalization Note No property of DDD or RRR is assumed; the domain enters only through the quantification over report profiles.
