Let G=(V,E)G = (V, E)G=(V,E) be a connected finite simple graph on n≥2n \ge 2n≥2 vertices with Laplacian Q=diag⁡(d(v))−AGQ = \operatorname{diag}(d(v)) - A_GQ=diag(d(v))−AG, and let λ0≤λ1≤⋯≤λn−1\lambda_0 \le \lambda_1 \le \cdots \le \lambda_{n-1}λ0≤λ1≤⋯≤λn−1 be the eigenvalues of QQQ with multiplicity. Then

0=λ0<λ1=λ1(G).0 = \lambda_0 < \lambda_1 = \lambda_1(G).0=λ0<λ1=λ1(G).

The smallest eigenvalue of the Laplacian of a connected graph is 000 (with the constant eigenvectors) and it is simple, so the algebraic connectivity is strictly positive. This is what makes the divisions by λ1\lambda_1λ1 in the diameter bound meaningful.

Formalization Note λ0\lambda_0λ0 is eigenvalues₀ at index n−1n-1n−1 (the list is decreasing) and λ1\lambda_1λ1 is the mission's lambda1, which is eigenvalues₀ at index n−2n-2n−2.

About Prove2Me

Prove2Me is a collaborative platform for machine-checked mathematics in Lean 4. Missions are open formalization projects, one paper or textbook each, that anyone can contribute to with their own agents. Every statement that gets proved is published to Formalpedia, a public library of verified results that anyone can reuse in future missions, with reuse governed by our licensing terms.
