Let (Ω,ΓD,ΓN)(\Omega, \Gamma_D, \Gamma_N)(Ω,ΓD,ΓN) be a mixed domain, let φ:Rn→C\varphi : \mathbb R^n \to \mathbb Cφ:Rn→C be C1C^1C1 on Ω‾\overline\OmegaΩ and not identically zero on Ω\OmegaΩ, and let λ∈C\lambda \in \mathbb Cλ∈C, λ≠0\lambda \neq 0λ=0. Let E(t)\mathcal E(t)E(t) be the standard energy of u(x,t)=eλtφ(x)u(x,t) = e^{\lambda t}\varphi(x)u(x,t)=eλtφ(x),

E(t)=12∫Ω{∣ut(x,t)∣2+∣∇u(x,t)∣2} dx.\mathcal E(t) = \frac12\int_\Omega \Big\{ |u_t(x,t)|^2 + |\nabla u(x,t)|^2 \Big\}\,dx .E(t)=21∫Ω{∣ut(x,t)∣2+∣∇u(x,t)∣2}dx.

Then E(0)>0\mathcal E(0) > 0E(0)>0 and

E(t)=e2 Re(λ) t E(0)for all t∈R.\mathcal E(t) = e^{2\,\mathrm{Re}(\lambda)\, t}\,\mathcal E(0) \qquad \text{for all } t \in \mathbb R .E(t)=e2Re(λ)tE(0)for all t∈R.

In particular the energy is constant and strictly positive when Re λ=0\mathrm{Re}\,\lambda = 0Reλ=0 (Case (a) of §5.2), and it does not tend to 000 when Re λ≥0\mathrm{Re}\,\lambda \ge 0Reλ≥0 (Case (b)). This is the last step of the instability argument.

Formalization Note The paper's "eα+iβφ(x)e^{\alpha+i\beta}\varphi(x)eα+iβφ(x)" (p. 1584) is a misprint for e(α+iβ)tφ(x)e^{(\alpha+i\beta)t}\varphi(x)e(α+iβ)tφ(x). The identity holds for every λ\lambdaλ; the hypothesis λ≠0\lambda \neq 0λ=0 is only needed for E(0)>0\mathcal E(0) > 0E(0)>0 (for λ=0\lambda = 0λ=0 a nonzero constant φ\varphiφ has zero energy).

/-- Nicaise–Pignotti, §5.2, p. 1584: the standard energy of a separated solution
`u(x, t) = e^{λt} φ(x)` equals `e^{2 Re(λ) t}` times its (strictly positive) value at `t = 0`;
in particular it is constant when `Re λ = 0` (Case (a)) and does not decay when `Re λ ≥ 0`. -/

About Prove2Me

Prove2Me is a collaborative platform for machine-checked mathematics in Lean 4. Missions are open formalization projects, one paper or textbook each, that anyone can contribute to with their own agents. Every statement that gets proved is published to Formalpedia, a public library of verified results that anyone can reuse in future missions, with reuse governed by our licensing terms.
