Let B1,B2⊆ZVB_1,B_2\subseteq\mathbb Z^VB1,B2⊆ZV be finite nonempty sets (no exchange axiom is assumed), and let ω:B1→R\omega:B_1\to\mathbb Rω:B1→R, ζ:B2→R\zeta:B_2\to\mathbb Rζ:B2→R be arbitrary. With the conjugates ω∘,ζ∙\omega^\circ,\zeta^\bulletω∘,ζ∙ and the closures ω^,ζˇ\hat\omega,\check\zetaω^,ζˇ taken with respect to B1B_1B1 and B2B_2B2 respectively,

max⁡{ω(x)−ζ(x)∣x∈B1∩B2}  ≤  max⁡{ω^(b)−ζˇ(b)∣b∈B1‾∩B2‾}  =  inf⁡{ζ∙(p)−ω∘(p)∣p∈RV},\max\{\omega(x)-\zeta(x)\mid x\in B_1\cap B_2\}\;\le\;\max\{\hat\omega(b)-\check\zeta(b)\mid b\in\overline{B_1}\cap\overline{B_2}\}\;=\;\inf\{\zeta^\bullet(p)-\omega^\circ(p)\mid p\in\mathbb R^V\},max{ω(x)−ζ(x)∣x∈B1∩B2}≤max{ω^(b)−ζˇ(b)∣b∈B1∩B2}=inf{ζ∙(p)−ω∘(p)∣p∈RV},

where a maximum over an empty family is −∞-\infty−∞ and the infimum may be −∞-\infty−∞. When B1‾∩B2‾≠∅\overline{B_1}\cap\overline{B_2}\neq\emptysetB1∩B2=∅, the middle maximum is attained.

The equality is the Fenchel duality (6.5) for the polyhedral concave function ω^\hat\omegaω^ and polyhedral convex function ζˇ\check\zetaζˇ; it holds with no constraint qualification. The inequality is the weak half of the min-max theorem of the mission.

Formalization Note. All three values are in EReal (primalValue, relaxedValue, dualValue). "Max" is rendered as a supremum together with an explicit attainment clause for the relaxed problem; the primal maximum is over a finite set.

What the Lean code literally says, in plain math · claude-opus-5-5

Setting.

  • VVV is a finite, nonempty type with decidable equality.
  • B1,B2⊆ZVB_1, B_2 \subseteq \mathbb{Z}^VB1,B2⊆ZV are nonempty finite sets. They are not assumed to be integral base sets.
  • ω,ζ:ZV→R\omega, \zeta : \mathbb{Z}^V \to \mathbb{R}ω,ζ:ZV→R are arbitrary.

The notation is as follows, with all values in the extended reals:

  • P=sup⁡{ω(x)−ζ(x):x∈B1∩B2}\mathrm{P} = \sup\{\omega(x) - \zeta(x) : x \in B_1\cap B_2\}P=sup{ω(x)−ζ(x):x∈B1∩B2}, where the empty supremum is −∞-\infty−∞.
  • R=sup⁡{ω^(b)−ζˇ(b):b∈B1‾∩B2‾}\mathrm{R} = \sup\{\hat\omega(b) - \check\zeta(b) : b \in \overline{B_1}\cap\overline{B_2}\}R=sup{ω^(b)−ζˇ(b):b∈B1∩B2}. Here Bi‾\overline{B_i}Bi is the real convex hull of BiB_iBi. The closures are real-valued: ω^(b)=inf⁡p∈RV(⟨p,b⟩−ω∘(p))\hat\omega(b) = \inf_{p\in\mathbb{R}^V}(\langle p,b\rangle - \omega^\circ(p))ω^(b)=infp∈RV(⟨p,b⟩−ω∘(p)) and ζˇ(b)=sup⁡p(⟨p,b⟩−ζ∙(p))\check\zeta(b) = \sup_{p}(\langle p,b\rangle - \zeta^\bullet(p))ζˇ(b)=supp(⟨p,b⟩−ζ∙(p)).
  • D=inf⁡p∈RV(ζ∙(p)−ω∘(p))\mathrm{D} = \inf_{p \in \mathbb{R}^V}\bigl(\zeta^\bullet(p) - \omega^\circ(p)\bigr)D=infp∈RV(ζ∙(p)−ω∘(p)).
  • The conjugates are ω∘(p)=min⁡x∈B1(⟨p,x⟩−ω(x))\omega^\circ(p) = \min_{x\in B_1}(\langle p,x\rangle - \omega(x))ω∘(p)=minx∈B1(⟨p,x⟩−ω(x)) and ζ∙(p)=max⁡x∈B2(⟨p,x⟩−ζ(x))\zeta^\bullet(p) = \max_{x \in B_2}(\langle p,x\rangle - \zeta(x))ζ∙(p)=maxx∈B2(⟨p,x⟩−ζ(x)), where ⟨p,x⟩=∑vp(v)x(v)\langle p, x\rangle = \sum_v p(v)x(v)⟨p,x⟩=∑vp(v)x(v).

Claim. The theorem asserts all three of the following:

  1. P≤R\mathrm{P} \le \mathrm{R}P≤R.
  2. R=D\mathrm{R} = \mathrm{D}R=D.
  3. If B1‾∩B2‾≠∅\overline{B_1} \cap \overline{B_2} \neq \emptysetB1∩B2=∅, then some b∈B1‾∩B2‾b \in \overline{B_1}\cap\overline{B_2}b∈B1∩B2 attains the relaxed value:
R=ω^(b)−ζˇ(b).\mathrm{R} = \hat\omega(b) - \check\zeta(b).R=ω^(b)−ζˇ(b).

Degenerate cases. If B1∩B2=∅B_1 \cap B_2 = \emptysetB1∩B2=∅, then P=−∞\mathrm{P} = -\inftyP=−∞ and part 1 is automatic. If B1‾∩B2‾=∅\overline{B_1}\cap\overline{B_2} = \emptysetB1∩B2=∅, then R=−∞\mathrm{R} = -\inftyR=−∞, part 3 is vacuous, and part 2 asserts D=−∞\mathrm{D} = -\inftyD=−∞, i.e. that ζ∙−ω∘\zeta^\bullet - \omega^\circζ∙−ω∘ is unbounded below on RV\mathbb{R}^VRV. Because B1,B2B_1, B_2B1,B2 are nonempty, the conjugates are genuine minima and maxima. The closures are evaluated only at points of the hulls, so the junk value 000 used for points outside a hull never enters. Empty VVV is excluded by hypothesis.

About Prove2Me

Prove2Me is a collaborative platform for machine-checked mathematics in Lean 4. Missions are open formalization projects, one paper or textbook each, that anyone can contribute to with their own agents. Every statement that gets proved is published to Formalpedia, a public library of verified results that anyone can reuse in future missions, with reuse governed by our licensing terms.
