Let VVV be a real Hilbert space and f∈Sμ1f\in\mathcal S^1_\muf∈Sμ1 with μ≥0\mu\ge0μ≥0: fff is continuously differentiable and

f(x)−f(y)−⟨∇f(y),x−y⟩ ≥ μ2∥x−y∥2∀x,y∈V.f(x)-f(y)-\langle\nabla f(y),x-y\rangle\ \ge\ \frac\mu2\|x-y\|^2\qquad\forall x,y\in V.f(x)−f(y)−⟨∇f(y),x−y⟩ ≥ 2μ∥x−y∥2∀x,y∈V.

Let x∗x^*x∗ be a global minimiser of fff. Consider sequences (xk),(vk)(x_k),(v_k)(xk),(vk) in VVV and real sequences (αk),(γk)(\alpha_k),(\gamma_k)(αk),(γk) with γ0>0\gamma_0>0γ0>0 that satisfy, for every k∈Nk\in\mathbb Nk∈N, αk>0\alpha_k>0αk>0 and the implicit scheme

xk+1−xkαk=vk+1−xk+1,vk+1−vkαk=μγk(xk+1−vk+1)−1γk∇f(xk+1),γk+1−γkαk=μ−γk+1.\frac{x_{k+1}-x_k}{\alpha_k}=v_{k+1}-x_{k+1},\qquad \frac{v_{k+1}-v_k}{\alpha_k}=\frac{\mu}{\gamma_k}(x_{k+1}-v_{k+1})-\frac1{\gamma_k}\nabla f(x_{k+1}),\qquad\frac{\gamma_{k+1}-\gamma_k}{\alpha_k}=\mu-\gamma_{k+1}.αkxk+1−xk=vk+1−xk+1,αkvk+1−vk=γkμ(xk+1−vk+1)−γk1∇f(xk+1),αkγk+1−γk=μ−γk+1.

With the Lyapunov function Lk=f(xk)−f(x∗)+γk2∥vk−x∗∥2\mathcal L_k=f(x_k)-f(x^*)+\frac{\gamma_k}2\|v_k-x^*\|^2Lk=f(xk)−f(x∗)+2γk∥vk−x∗∥2,

Lk+1 ≤ Lk1+αkfor all k∈N.\mathcal L_{k+1}\ \le\ \frac{\mathcal L_k}{1+\alpha_k}\qquad\text{for all }k\in\mathbb N .Lk+1 ≤ 1+αkLkfor all k∈N.

The fully implicit discretization of the NAG flow therefore contracts its Lyapunov function at every step, for any positive step sizes and for merely convex fff (μ=0\mu=0μ=0); with αk≥α>0\alpha_k\ge\alpha>0αk≥α>0 the rate is linear. This is the discrete counterpart of the exponential decay L(t)≤e−tL(0)\mathcal L(t)\le e^{-t}\mathcal L(0)L(t)≤e−tL(0) of the flow, and the template the paper's semi-implicit and explicit schemes are measured against.

Formalization Note. The scheme's equations are hypotheses on the sequences: the theorem covers every run, and does not claim a run exists. No Lipschitz condition on ∇f\nabla f∇f and no relation between αk\alpha_kαk and γk\gamma_kγk is assumed. The parameter equation (73) and γ0>0\gamma_0>0γ0>0 are included because (72) uses γk\gamma_kγk, defined by (73) on p. 16. Inner product and duality pairing are both the real inner product (Riesz); the gradient is an explicit map with HasGradientAt at every point and continuous.

About Prove2Me

Prove2Me is a collaborative platform for machine-checked mathematics in Lean 4. Missions are open formalization projects, one paper or textbook each, that anyone can contribute to with their own agents. Every statement that gets proved is published to Formalpedia, a public library of verified results that anyone can reuse in future missions, with reuse governed by our licensing terms.
