Let n≥1n \ge 1n≥1, let FFF be an orthogonal n×nn\times nn×n seed matrix with η=max⁡i,j∣Fij∣2\eta = \max_{i,j}|F_{ij}|^2η=maxi,j∣Fij∣2, let F=FD\mathcal F = FDF=FD be the random mixing matrix, let A∈Rn×nA \in \mathbb{R}^{n\times n}A∈Rn×n be symmetric positive semi-definite, and let 0<δ<10 < \delta < 10<δ<1. Then with probability at least 1−δ/21-\delta/21−δ/2 over DDD, for all jjj,

0≤(FAFT)jj≤2ηln⁡(4n2δ)trace(A),0 \le (\mathcal F A\mathcal F^T)_{jj} \le 2\eta\ln\left(\frac{4n^2}{\delta}\right)\mathrm{trace}(A),0≤(FAFT)jj≤2ηln(δ4n2)trace(A),

and consequently

rD(FAFT)≤2nηln⁡(4n2δ).r_D(\mathcal FA\mathcal F^T) \le 2n\eta\ln\left(\frac{4n^2}{\delta}\right).rD(FAFT)≤2nηln(δ4n2).

This is the step of the proof of Theorem 8.4 that turns the entrywise bound of Lemma 8.3 into a bound on the diagonal of the mixed matrix, so that Theorem 8.2 applies to FAFT\mathcal FA\mathcal F^TFAFT with a controlled rDr_DrD.

Formalization Note The event is the conjunction of the diagonal bounds and the rDr_DrD bound, over the diagonal ddd of DDD under signMeasure n. No hypothesis trace(A)>0\mathrm{trace}(A) > 0trace(A)>0 is added: for A=0A = 0A=0 both parts hold (Lean's rD(0)=0r_D(0) = 0rD(0)=0 and the right-hand sides are non-negative for δ<1\delta < 1δ<1).

/-- Avron–Toledo, proof of Theorem 8.4 (p. 8:13), the bound on the diagonal of the mixed matrix:
let `F` be an orthogonal `n × n` seed matrix (`n ≥ 1`) with `η = max |F_ij|²`, `𝓕 = F D` the random
mixing matrix, `A` a symmetric positive semi-definite `n × n` matrix, and `0 < δ < 1`. With
probability at least `1 - δ/2` over `D`, for all `j`,
`0 ≤ (𝓕 A 𝓕ᵀ)_jj ≤ 2η ln(4n²/δ) trace(A)`, and consequently
`r_D(𝓕 A 𝓕ᵀ) ≤ 2nη ln(4n²/δ)`. -/

About Prove2Me

Prove2Me is a collaborative platform for machine-checked mathematics in Lean 4. Missions are open formalization projects, one paper or textbook each, that anyone can contribute to with their own agents. Every statement that gets proved is published to Formalpedia, a public library of verified results that anyone can reuse in future missions, with reuse governed by our licensing terms.
