Let X∈Rn×pX\in\mathbb R^{n\times p}X∈Rn×p, y∈Rny\in\mathbb R^ny∈Rn, λ0,λ2,M>0\lambda_0,\lambda_2,M>0λ0,λ2,M>0 with λ0/λ2≤M\sqrt{\lambda_0/\lambda_2}\le Mλ0/λ2≤M. Let β∗\beta^*β∗ be an optimal solution of the reduced relaxation (5): ∥β∗∥∞≤M\|\beta^*\|_\infty\le M∥β∗∥∞≤M and F(β∗)≤F(β)F(\beta^*)\le F(\beta)F(β∗)≤F(β) whenever ∥β∥∞≤M\|\beta\|_\infty\le M∥β∥∞≤M. Put r∗=y−Xβ∗r^*=y-X\beta^*r∗=y−Xβ∗ and

α∗=−r∗,γi∗=1[∣βi∗∣=M](α∗TXi−2Mλ2 sign(α∗TXi)),i∈[p].\alpha^*=-r^*,\qquad \gamma^*_i=\mathbb 1_{[|\beta^*_i|=M]}\big(\alpha^{*T}X_i-2M\lambda_2\,\mathrm{sign}(\alpha^{*T}X_i)\big),\quad i\in[p].α∗=−r∗,γi∗=1[∣βi∗∣=M](α∗TXi−2Mλ2sign(α∗TXi)),i∈[p].

Then

h1(α∗,γ∗)=F(β∗).h_1(\alpha^*,\gamma^*)=F(\beta^*).h1(α∗,γ∗)=F(β∗).

Together with weak duality this says that (α∗,γ∗)(\alpha^*,\gamma^*)(α∗,γ∗) is an optimal solution of the dual (20) and that there is no duality gap. The paper's dual bounds of §3.2 are built by imitating this choice at an inexact primal solution.

Formalization Note sign is Real.sign with sign(0)=0\mathrm{sign}(0)=0sign(0)=0; the paper allows sign(0)∈[−1,1]\mathrm{sign}(0)\in[-1,1]sign(0)∈[−1,1], but at an index with ∣βi∗∣=M|\beta^*_i|=M∣βi∗∣=M optimality forces ∣α∗TXi∣≥2Mλ2>0|\alpha^{*T}X_i|\ge 2M\lambda_2>0∣α∗TXi∣≥2Mλ2>0, so the convention is never used. Optimality of β∗\beta^*β∗ is a hypothesis; existence of a minimizer is not assumed.

/-- (23), Theorem 2, p. 14 (proof p. 31). Let `√(λ₀/λ₂) ≤ M` and let `β*` be an optimal solution
of (5). With `r* = y − Xβ*`, the dual variables `α* = −r*` and
`γ*ᵢ = 𝟙[|β*ᵢ| = M](α*ᵀXᵢ − 2Mλ₂ sign(α*ᵀXᵢ))` attain the optimal value of (5):
`h₁(α*, γ*) = L0BnB.Reduced.F(β*)`. -/

About Prove2Me

Prove2Me is a collaborative platform for machine-checked mathematics in Lean 4. Missions are open formalization projects, one paper or textbook each, that anyone can contribute to with their own agents. Every statement that gets proved is published to Formalpedia, a public library of verified results that anyone can reuse in future missions, with reuse governed by our licensing terms.
