Let (E,E)(E,\mathcal E)(E,E) be a measurable space with measurable singletons and a countably generated σ\sigmaσ-algebra, and let π\piπ be a probability measure on EEE (the target). Let (Qi)i∈I(Q_i)_{i\in I}(Qi)i∈I be a finite or countable family of Markov proposal kernels on EEE and let βi≥0\beta_i\ge 0βi≥0 with ∑iβi=1\sum_i\beta_i=1∑iβi=1. Let PiP_iPi be the maximal Metropolis–Hastings kernel for QiQ_iQi, and let PPP be the maximal Metropolis–Hastings kernel for the mixture proposal Q=∑iβiQiQ=\sum_i\beta_iQ_iQ=∑iβiQi. Then

P  ⪰  ∑iβiPi,P\;\succeq\;\sum_i\beta_iP_i,P⪰i∑βiPi,

that is, for π\piπ-almost every x∈Ex\in Ex∈E,

P(x,A∖{x})  ≥  ∑iβi Pi(x,A∖{x})for all A∈E.P(x,A\setminus\{x\})\;\ge\;\sum_i\beta_i\,P_i(x,A\setminus\{x\})\qquad\text{for all } A\in\mathcal E .P(x,A∖{x})≥i∑βiPi(x,A∖{x})for all A∈E.

There are two ways of combining Metropolis–Hastings samplers built on proposals QiQ_iQi: mix the samplers, or run a single sampler with the mixture proposal. Combined with Peskun's theorem for general state spaces (Theorem 4 of the paper), the proposition shows that the second has asymptotic variances of sample-path averages no larger than the first, whatever the weights.

Formalization Note Two hypotheses implicit in the paper are made explicit: singletons are measurable, as the sets A∖{x}A\setminus\{x\}A∖{x} and point masses δx\delta_xδx require; and the σ\sigmaσ-algebra E\mathcal EE is countably generated. The second is an addition: the proof in the paper shows an inequality between measures on E×EE\times EE×E, and passing to the kernel-level statement, with one π\piπ-null set of exceptional xxx for all AAA simultaneously, uses a countable generating family. The weights are in ℝ≥0 with HasSum β 1, and the index type is countable.

/-- **Proposition 5** (Tierney 1998, p. 7). Let `Qᵢ` be a (countable) sequence of Markov
proposal kernels and `βᵢ ≥ 0` with `∑ βᵢ = 1`. Let `Pᵢ` be the maximal Metropolis–Hastings
kernel for `Qᵢ` and `P` the maximal Metropolis–Hastings kernel for the mixture proposal
`Q = ∑ βᵢ Qᵢ`, all for the target `π`. Then `P ⪰ ∑ βᵢ Pᵢ`: for `π`-almost every `x`,
`P(x, A \ {x}) ≥ ∑ βᵢ Pᵢ(x, A \ {x})` for all measurable `A`.

Added hypotheses: measurable singletons (implicit in the paper's `A \ {x}`), and a countably
generated σ-algebra on `E`, which makes the exceptional `π`-null set uniform over `A`. -/

About Prove2Me

Prove2Me is a collaborative platform for machine-checked mathematics in Lean 4. Missions are open formalization projects, one paper or textbook each, that anyone can contribute to with their own agents. Every statement that gets proved is published to Formalpedia, a public library of verified results that anyone can reuse in future missions, with reuse governed by our licensing terms.
