Let G=(V,E)G = (V, E)G=(V,E) be a connected finite simple graph on n≥2n \ge 2n≥2 vertices, d(v)d(v)d(v) the degree of vvv, and λ1=λ1(G)\lambda_1 = \lambda_1(G)λ1=λ1(G) the second-smallest eigenvalue of its Laplacian. Then

λ1≤nn−1 min⁡{d(v):v∈V}.\lambda_1 \le \frac{n}{n-1}\,\min\{d(v) : v \in V\}.λ1≤n−1nmin{d(v):v∈V}.

In the proof of Theorem 2.6 this gives 2d/λ1≥1\sqrt{2d/\lambda_1} \ge 12d/λ1≥1, where ddd is the maximum degree; the bound itself goes back to Fiedler.

Formalization Note min⁡vd(v)\min_v d(v)minvd(v) is Mathlib's SimpleGraph.minDegree; nnn and the degree are cast to R\mathbb RR.

About Prove2Me

Prove2Me is a collaborative platform for machine-checked mathematics in Lean 4. Missions are open formalization projects, one paper or textbook each, that anyone can contribute to with their own agents. Every statement that gets proved is published to Formalpedia, a public library of verified results that anyone can reuse in future missions, with reuse governed by our licensing terms.
