Let ggg be a monotone, submodular set function on a finite ground set PPP, with g(∅)≥0g(\varnothing)\ge0g(∅)≥0. Greedy begins with the empty set, repeatedly adds an available element giving the largest next value, and stops when it reaches cardinality kkk or exhausts PPP. For every output Δ\DeltaΔ, including every tie-breaking choice, and every feasible comparison set S⊆PS\subseteq PS⊆P with ∣S∣≤k|S|\le k∣S∣≤k,

g(Δ)≥(1−1/e) g(S).g(\Delta)\ge(1-1/e)\,g(S).g(Δ)≥(1−1/e)g(S).

This is the classical bound cited for the truncated objective in the proof of Theorem 4.2.

Formalization Note The nonnegative empty-set value is needed for the multiplicative form. It holds with equality for the paper's truncated objective.

About Prove2Me

Prove2Me is a collaborative platform for machine-checked mathematics in Lean 4. Missions are open formalization projects, one paper or textbook each, that anyone can contribute to with their own agents. Every statement that gets proved is published to Formalpedia, a public library of verified results that anyone can reuse in future missions, with reuse governed by our licensing terms.
