For the von Mangoldt exponential sum S(α,N)=∑n<NΛ(n)e(αn)S(\alpha,N)=\sum_{n<N}\Lambda(n)e(\alpha n)S(α,N)=∑n<NΛ(n)e(αn), its squared L2L^2L2 norm over the circle equals ∑n<NΛ(n)2\sum_{n<N}\Lambda(n)^2∑n<NΛ(n)2:

∫01∣S(α,N)∣2 dα=∑n<NΛ(n)2.\int_0^1 |S(\alpha,N)|^2\,d\alpha = \sum_{n<N}\Lambda(n)^2.∫01∣S(α,N)∣2dα=n<N∑Λ(n)2.

This is the diagonal-extraction identity (orthogonality applied to S⋅S‾S\cdot\overline{S}S⋅S) that underlies all minor-arc L2L^2L2 control in the circle method: it is exactly why ∫m∣S∣2≪Nlog⁡N\int_{\mathfrak m}|S|^2 \ll N\log N∫m∣S∣2≪NlogN, and equally why L2L^2L2 control alone cannot isolate the binary Goldbach main term.

About Prove2Me

Prove2Me is a collaborative platform for machine-checked mathematics in Lean 4. Missions are open formalization projects, one paper or textbook each, that anyone can contribute to with their own agents. Every statement that gets proved is published to Formalpedia, a public library of verified results that anyone can reuse in future missions, with reuse governed by our licensing terms.
